UPDATED: 5 More Republicans Join Growing Calls for Sessions to Recuse Himself

Jeff Sessions is in trouble – deep trouble. According to The Washington Post, then-Senator Jeff Sessions spoke twice last year with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, considered by U.S. intelligence to be one of Russia’s top spies. However, during his confirmation hearings, Sessions stated “I did not have communications with the Russians.”

But he did. That’s perjury. Committing perjury under oath is serious – just ask 1999 Jeff Sessions.

It is clear that Sessions must recuse himself from any investigation into Donald Trump’s connections to Russia.

Take a look at the growing list of Republicans calling for Sessions to recuse himself:

NEW Senator Rob Portman: “I think it would be best for him and for the country to recuse himself from the DOJ Russia probe.”

NEW Senator Jeff Flake: “Obviously he is going to need to clarify and likely recuse himself from any investigation with regard […]

GOP Threatens Government Shutdown Rather Than Provide Clean Water & Flood Relief

American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response to this afternoon’s Senate votes:

“Republicans are threatening to shutdown the government rather than provide clean water to familiies in Flint, Michigan, or offer flood relief to Louisianans who lost their homes and belongings only weeks ago. The GOP continues to prove they can’t get the job done when they’re in charge, adding to the burden on American families in order to play politics with women’s health care. Americans are sick of the Trumpian bullying. There’s no chance of redemption for the vulnerable GOP senators as they attempt to fight for re-election after threating to close the government (again) and voting to hurt working families.”

WATCH: Trump Pulls Back The Curtain On Cozy Relationship With Rob Portman

Rob Portman and his campaign have tried again and again to distance themselves from Donald Trump, continuously insisting that they’re running their own campaign separate from the bombastic Republican presidential nominee. Regardless of what the Portman campaign claims, the Ohio senator has endorsed Donald Trump and continues to support him after each shameful and outrageous comment — and he’ll have to keep answering as to why he hasn’t denounced the racist, xenophobic nominee.

This morning, Donald Trump pulled back the curtain on the Portman campaign on Fox News, saying:

“…We’re getting along great with Rob Portman, who’s also doing well. We’re working together. We’ve endorsed each other. We have a great relationship.”

American Bridge Launches New Site: CrazyThingsRepublicansSay.com

Today, American Bridge 21st Century is launching a new website called CrazyThingsRepublicansSay.com. The site focuses on the fall back lines of the vulnerable GOP senate candidates who continue to stand behind Donald Trump despite his dangerous policies, racist and bigoted attacks on Americans, and unpredictable temperament unfit for a Commander-in-Chief.

The site includes excuses by Senators Kelly Ayotte, Marco Rubio, Rob Portman, Richard Burr, John McCain, Ron Johnson, as well as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Congressman Joe Heck and Scott Brown. CrazyThingsRepublicansSay.com is an ongoing project and will be updated regularly.

American Bridge President Jessica Mackler:

“The entire GOP field continues to squirm every time they’re asked about their nominee Donald Trump, but at the end of the day, they want Trump to lead our country. Rubio, Ayotte, Portman, Burr, McCain, Johnson, McConnell, and Brown have all been given ample opportunity to reject Trump — he’s attacked a […]

Rob Portman Confirms He Trusts “Reckless” and “Erratic” Presidential Candidate With Nuclear Codes

After 50 Republican national security experts came out against Donald Trump, and numerous senators refusing to say whether or not they would trust their party’s nominee with the nuclear codes, Ohio Senator Rob Portman has come out with another full-throated endorsement of Trump.

Portman confirmed today through his spokesman that he would trust Donald Trump — who Republican national security experts have called “reckless” and “erratic” — with the nuclear codes:

“Rob believes that Mr. Trump and the national security team he appoints will protect our security interests and do everything they can to keep America safe, and that includes the president’s nuclear responsibilities,” Rich said.

Toledo Blade: Ted to Rob: Comfortable with Don Controlling the Nuclear Button? Rob to Ted: Yes

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ted Strickland’s campaign keeps up its pressure on Republican Sen. Rob Portman to disavow the Republican presidential nominee today.

What Ohioans Are Reading: Rob Portman Takes Heat With Donald Trump In His Backyard

Between explaining his support for trade deals that have shipped jobs overseas and benefit China and Mexico more than they do Ohio AND explaining his continued support for Donald Trump, Rob Portman is facing an increasingly tough reelection fight.  As Trump’s visits to Ohio become more and more frequent, Portman’s mealy-mouthed attempts to distance himself from the GOP’s xenophobic, sexist nominee become even less believable.
Portman may not stand with Trump on stage at his rally today, but make no mistake — he’s stood by Trump as the GOP nominee has hurled insults and made shameful, unacceptable comments. Just last week, Portman reaffirmed his support for Trump even after Trump suggested violence against his political opponent.

Kevin Necessary at WCPO put it best in his editorial cartoon last week. Here’s a taste of what Ohioans will see as Portman continues to put party over Ohio and align himself with Donald Trump:

Profile In Courage: Rob Portman Stands Behind Donald Trump TODAY After Offensive, Violent Remarks

Donald Trump has repeatedly made offensive, racist and sexist comments throughout the campaign, but yesterday at a North Carolina rally, he crossed the line into irresponsible, dangerous and terrifying when he suggested violence if Hillary Clinton wins.

Today, Rob Portman chose to reaffirm his support for Donald Trump, even after he threatened violence against a political opponent.

Rob Portman’s continued support of Trump as he’s attacked Gold Star parents and spewed anti-immigrant language is shameful, but the reaffirmation of his endorsement today is downright appalling. Portman has shown that he’ll always put partisanship over Ohioans, and there’s no comment offensive or dangerous enough to change that.

New Digital Ads Highlights Senate GOP’s Unwavering Support For Trump

American Bridge is releasing a new digital ad campaign highlighting vulnerable GOP senate candidates’ unwavering support for Donald Trump, even after he lashed out at a Gold Star Family, the Khans.

From American Bridge President Jessica Mackler:

“Republican senators and senate candidates can’t have it both ways: supporting Donald Trump for the presidency means backing his offensive and un-American attacks on the Khan family.  Senators Toomey, Burr, Blunt, Rubio, Johnson, Portman, and Congressman Joe Heck have deserted common decency in favor of the Party of Trump. Their cowardice knows no bounds and they are divorced from reality if they believe that the American voters won’t see through the facade in November.”

Trump’s Crusade Against Gold Star Family Draws Widespread Condemnation–But Not From Elected Republicans

As Donald Trump continues to attack the family of slain United States Army Captain Humayun Khan, outrage from non-partisan veterans’ organizations and military support groups continues to mount. Organizations representing veterans and veterans’ families are calling on Trump to apologize for his outrageous crusade against the Khans.

Remarkably, the number of Republicans who will no longer support him following his attack on military families stands at a grand total of zero. This has apparently changed nothing in the minds of Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, Roy Blunt, Kelly Ayotte, Rob Portman, John McCain, Mitch McConnell, or Paul Ryan who still support Trump after he chose to disparage Gold Star families rather than demonstrate a reverence for their sacrifice.
