2024 Watch: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Pushes Extreme Culture War Agenda

Apr 01, 2022

DeSantis’ Out-Of-Touch Agenda Furthers His Political Ambitions, While Ignoring Floridians’ Health And Economic Prosperity

This week, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis continued to embrace his far-right agenda in a transparent effort to strengthen his 2024 GOP presidential bid at the expense of Florida families. While Floridians have suffered from the pandemic and kitchen table issues like skyrocketing property insurance, DeSantis has worked tirelessly to advance his own personal politics. In return for the support of extremists within the Republican Party, DeSantis sold out the safety and prosperity of Floridians.

Here is the legislation that DeSantis supported and signed to score cheap political points with Fox News at the expense of his constituents:

  1. DeSantis Wastes Millions Promoting Trump’s “Big Lie”. Despite no evidence of widespread voter fraud, DeSantis is on track to become the first governor to create a “fake” state election fraud police force — wasting millions of taxpayer dollars to address conspiracy theories and a nonexistent problem.
  2. DeSantis Signs Mississippi-style Abortion Ban. DeSantis signed into law a restrictive unconstitutional abortion ban that strips Floridians of rights they’ve held for more than 50 years. The deeply unpopular and dangerous legislation ends access to safe and legal abortion in Florida.
  3. DeSantis Hurts Schools, Libraries, and Teachers. Last Friday, DeSantis signed racist, dog-whistle legislation that will make it harder for teachers to do their jobs. Republicans in the legislature decided to ban books rather than lower the cost of child care or secure paid family leave, and DeSantis was all too happy to put his pen to paper and sign.
  4. DeSantis Targets LGBTQ+ Youth With Don’t Say Gay Bill. On Monday, DeSantis signed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, forcing thousands of LGBTQ+ children, their families, and their teachers to live in fear. The bill allows politicians to censor schools and makes classrooms less safe.

“Ron DeSantis has ignored legislation that would lower costs for Florida families,” said American Bridge Spokesperson Aidan Johnson. “He claims to be on the side of parents but is really in the pocket of his billionaire backers. At every turn, DeSantis has ignored measures that would help working moms and dads get ahead — opposing Democratic efforts to lower the cost of property insurance, make health care more affordable and accessible by expanding Medicaid, and keep communities safe after the tragedy at Surfside.”
