DeVos Meets With Fellow Ideologue, Puts Anti-Public School Agenda on Full Display

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is today meeting with Rex Sinquefield, a Donald Trump-supporting Republican megadonor who also happens to be a right-wing conspiracy theorist — a move that puts her dangerous, anti-public school agenda on full display for the country to see. Sinquefield’s highlights include:

Infamously claiming that the KKK “designed” the public school system to “hurt African-American children.”
Bragging that one of his main interests is “rescuing education from teachers’ unions.”
Pouring at least $750,000 into a campaign to end teacher tenure protections in Missouri, and additionally giving millions into the Show-Me Institute, a conservative think tank that advocates school privatization and sponsors research attacking public schools and teachers.

Meanwhile, Trump and DeVos’ education budget proposal is a full-on attack on America’s public schools that  Read more after the jump.

DeVos Can’t Defend Her And Trump’s Cruel Education Budget

This is a difficult budget request to defend.”

Even Senator Roy Blunt, who has over the years benefited from more than $35,000 in campaign contributions from Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and her family, had no choice but to admit that DeVos and Trump’s proposed Department of Education budget cuts are devastating.

Things didn’t go well for DeVos at today’s Senate Appropriations Committee subcommittee hearing on the Trump Administration’s Education budget request. In addition to yet again proving that she lacks the experience and knowledge to lead the Education Department, DeVos, among other things, refused to commit to working for full anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ kids in schools, and even suggested she thinks that it’s fine for for-profit elementary school CEOs to make millions funneling off public education funds.

DeVos: Protecting Kids From Discrimination And Harassment Is “Overreach”

American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos saying it’s “overreach” to protect young students from discrimination on the basis of gender identity:

“We knew Betsy DeVos doesn’t respect our public education system and teachers, and now we know that DeVos doesn’t respect the basic human rights of our students. It isn’t “overreach” to keep kids from being bullied, harassed, and discriminated against — and it’s a disgrace that DeVos, Trump, and the rest of the Republican Party think otherwise.”

Building Bipartisan Opposition To DeVos Proves She Is a Danger to Public Education

American Bridge President Jessica Mackler issued the following statement on the bipartisan consensus against Betsy DeVos’ confirmation:

“Betsy DeVos is an enemy of public schools who would let corporations control our children’s education: that’s why there’s a growing bipartisan opposition to her confirmation. Republicans like Pat Toomey, Dean Heller, Rob Portman, and Jeff Flake should show some leadership for once, and join the bipartisan coalition taking a stand against DeVos as an active threat to our students, teachers, and schools.

“Despite an embarrassing hearing that exposed her total unpreparedness, DeVos has tried to cruise through the confirmation process on the millions of dollars she and her family have spent buying up politicians. Pat Toomey and Rob Portman have each taken $50,000-a-piece; now’s their chance to put America’s children over their own campaign accounts and rebuke an extremist donor who’s unfit to serve.”
