Mitch McConnell hides the ball on Trumpcare

Jun 13, 2017

American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates released the following statement after Senator Mitch McConnell dodged questions about when Senate Republicans would let the American people view the Trumpcare bill that is being written in secret with an undisclosed list of special interest lobbyists:

“Mitch McConnell’s leadership of the Senate Trumpcare process, which has exclusively taken place behind closed doors, is pure malfeasance.  After decrying more than a year of hearings that preceded passage of the Affordable Care Act, he and Senate Republicans are rewriting the American healthcare system exclusively behind closed doors with lobbyists and special interests but without the American public. It is only because of leaks that we have learned the Senate’s Trumpcare bill would have the same devastating consequences for American families as the House version: millions losing insurance and price-gouging for people suffering from pre-existing conditions. He says the American people can ask Republicans anything about this, but even his own members don’t even know what the hell he’s doing. Mitch McConnell is a liar, and the public is going to hold him and his caucus accountable for forcing this reckless bill upon the country.”

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL IN 2009:

Sen. Mitch McConnell,  12/21/2009“Any challenge of this size and scope has always been dealt with on a bipartisan basis….Americans believe that on issues of this importance, one party should never be allowed to force its will on the other half of the nation.”

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL TODAY:

Sen. Mitch McConnell, 6/13/2017Everybody is participating who wants to and the idea is to get enough votes to pass it. Unfortunately it will have to be a Republicans-only exercise, but we’re working hard to get there.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell, 6/13/2017“Look, we’re been dealing with this issue for seven years.  It’s not a new thing. We’ve spent a lot of time on it – all of us, both sides, over the last seven years. We know a lot about the subject. We know how complicated it is. Nobody’s hiding the ball here.  You’re free to ask anybody anything.”
