Senate Brief: 1 Week | Closing Arguments

Week of Monday, October 29

IN BRIEF: One week out from Election Day, Republican Senate candidates are en route to fall far short of expectations. Here’s why:

This cycle’s map was supposed to be a Republican juggernaut. After the 2016 election, onlookers predicted a Republican sweep of 10 Senate seats held by Democratic Senators in states that Trump won.
But multiple recruitment failures, a deeply unpopular president, and Republican ineffectiveness have evened the playing field. States once thought to be in play — Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin — are effectively off the map. And even in redder states like Montana and West Virginia, flawed Republican candidates have failed to overtake popular incumbents.
The GOP has failed to find any meaningful message on which to campaign. Democrats have displayed across-the-board message discipline on the cycle’s #1 issue — healthcare — forcing Republicans to play defense on policies […]

NEW VIDEO: Cruz Throws In The Towel, Campaigns With Trump

American Bridge is launching a new social media video before Ted Cruz rallies with Donald Trump on October 22.

The video reminds voters that Cruz and Trump pulled no punches as primary opponents. Some of their best lines include:

“Donald, you’re a sniveling coward.” –Cruz
“I watched Ted Cruz this morning. Oh, I can’t listen. So dramatic: aah uuh-aah.”-–Trump
“He’s a pussy.” –Trump
“If I were in my car and getting ready to reverse and saw Donald in the backup camera, I’m not confident which pedal I’d push.” –Cruz

Charming.

The video ends with Cruz waving the white flag to campaign with Trump, and asks Texans to throw in the towel on Cruz come Election Day.

National Republicans Hit The Panic Button In Texas

“At the first sign of trouble, Ted Cruz abandoned his long-held facade of independence and ran straight to K Street. Now, he’s dragging national Republicans down with him in his attempt to save his Senate campaign,” said American Bridge spokesperson Amelia Penniman.

Politico: Inside the GOP’s rescue mission for Ted Cruz
By Alex Isenstadt | September 9, 2018

“With a string of polls showing GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s lead slipping, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick showed up in Washington on July 25 to deliver an urgent plea to White House officials: Send President Donald Trump.”

“The previously unreported meeting comes as senior Republicans grow increasingly concerned about the senator’s prospects in the reliably red state, with some expressing fear that an underperformance could threaten GOP candidates running further down the ballot.”

“Trump’s rally is just the most public display of a Republican cavalry rushing to the senator’s aid…The party…is suddenly leaving little to chance. Behind the […]

Cruz, Sessions Targeted by New “Worst For Women” Campaign

Today, American Bridge and UltraViolet PAC are launching a new campaign targeting Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Pete Sessions with grassroots actions across Texas. The campaign, “Worst for Women,” highlights more than a dozen members of Congress as the “Worst for Women” with digital ads and a new micro-site featuring an inaugural legislative scorecard.

Texans concerned with Cruz and Sessions’ dangerous and extreme agenda are presenting the “Worst for Women” award to Sen. Cruz and Rep. Sessions’ offices in Dallas, Austin, and Washington D.C. today.

UltraViolet PAC and American Bridge delivered a Worst for Women award to Ted Cruz’s office in Washington, D.C. today.

The Worst for Women five-figure digital buy has begun, and directs persuadable female voters to learn about Cruz and Sessions’ record on the Worst for Women micro-site, here: http://worstforwomen.com/.

Cruz and Sessions tout Trump’s dangerous and extreme agenda—voting in line with Trump as much as 98 percent of the time. They’ve consistently voted to repeal health care, to protect the […]

FLASHBACK: Earlier this Year, Graham, Cassidy, Heller Said CBO Scores Vital to Vetting Health Care Bills

This week, Senate Republicans once against exposed their partisan hypocrisy by recklessly dismissing the need for a full CBO score of the Graham-Cassidy-Heller health care bill before voting on it, even though–as recently as this summer–Senators Dean Heller, Lindsay Graham, Bill Cassidy, and many others said they needed a CBO score to evaluate health care bills.

Without a CBO score, basic information such as how many people will lose coverage, how much premiums will increase, and how much more care for common pre-existing conditions will increase will not be known. The Senate GOP’s game plan is to keep Americans in the dark — because they know the more the American people learn about their latest Trumpcare plan, the more they hate it.

“The same senators trying to ram this latest disastrous Trumpcare bill though Congress were — just months ago — eloquently explaining why a comprehensive analysis by the Congressional Budget Office […]

First Cornyn, now Cruz admit that they are playing politics with the American people’s healthcare

“The second Republican Senator in as many days just admitted the truth: they and Donald Trump are endangering the healthcare of the American people in order to practice the most cynical form of partisan politics imaginable,” said American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates. “Yesterday John Cornyn said it would be a ‘luxury’ to know if the Senate would vote to take coverage from 22 or 32 million Americans, and now Ted Cruz is urging Republicans to put the next year’s elections ahead of the well-being of American families.”

Washington Examiner: Ted Cruz warns: Failure to act on Obamacare will hurt GOP in 2018
by Anna Giaritelli

Sen Ted Cruz, R-Texas, lashed out at Senate Republicans on Friday for their inaction in healthcare reform legislation, and said it could result in real problems for the GOP in the mid-term elections.

Fox News co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked Cruz on Friday if senators are worried […]

Eddie Vale Statement On Cruz’s Commitment to SCOTUS Obstructionism

American Bridge Vice President Eddie Vale issued the following statement on Ted Cruz’s indication he’ll carry on Republicans’ unprecedented obstructionism with respect to the Supreme Court vacancy:

“For a self-described ‘principled conservative,’ servile Trump puppy dog Ted Cruz sure spends a lot of time obstructing the democratic process and ignoring his constitutional obligations. The Republican Party’s disdain for any form of compromise created Trump, and Cruz is making it clear that the Party of Trump isn’t changing.”

No Big Deal! The GOP Is Just Less United Than Ever

Tonight, Donald Trump should be doing a victory lap, celebrating the GOP nomination, and bringing together the party to win. Instead, no matter how many times he insists that Ted Cruz’s refusal to endorse him last night was “no big deal!” the story coming out of the Republican Trump National Convention will be that the party is less united than ever.

History will remember the 2016 RNC as the year that the Humpty Trumpty finally broke the GOP into pieces and gave a voice to its most extreme, red-meat base. Even their unadulterated hate for the other party wasn’t enough — all of Reince’s men can try, but they can’t put the Republican Party back together again in time for November.

Here’s what will go down in history from the convention”

Ted Cruz Torches Trump’s Convention

Earlier in the week, Donald Trump did an hour-long interview with the Golf Channel as counter-programming to his own convention.

Tonight, Trump decided to keep the counter-programming in house, by letting Ted Cruz go up on stage off-script and refuse to endorse him.

Let’s just say people won’t be talking about Mike Pence’s acceptance speech tomorrow:

Pence is going to have to do or say something pretty interesting to compete with Cruz news.

Day Three: Make America Reactionary Again

Donald Trump’s insurgent campaign has often been compared to that of Barry Goldwater’s far-right run in 1964. The speakers featured on Trump’s “Make America First Again” night would have fit right in at a Republican convention held a generation ago–though there are no records of Goldwater delegates calling for the execution of Lyndon Johnson. Three different Trump advisers have called for Clinton executed or as one phrased it, “put in the firing range.” But hey, “all press is good press” in the eyes of Trump, apparently including reports of plagiarized speeches and banana republic style calls for extrajudicial political murders.

Politicians peddling anti-choice, anti-immigrant, and anti-gay rhetoric will be prominently featured on Wednesday night. Throw in some political corruption, a bit of state-run media, and some pro-smoking propaganda and tonight will be nearly indistinguishable from the politics of the mid-twentieth century.

Of course, the common thread between each of tonight’s […]
