Sununu opposed the American Rescue Plan, including the law’s expanded child tax credit
While taking steps that bring him closer to a U.S. Senate run, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu is brazenly touting the benefits of the American Rescue Plan, the Democratic COVID-19 relief package he opposed, reports HuffPost.
Sununu has clearly said, “I’d be a ‘no’ vote” on that bill — but that isn’t stopping him from touting its programs that are lifting up Granite State families, as a direct result of U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan’s leadership and decisive vote in support of the relief package.
Those programs include not just the Hassan-backed federal funding to support the child care initiatives Sununu is touting, but also Democrats’ expansion of the child tax credit — a tax cut that prioritizes middle-class families, in contrast to the 2017 GOP tax law that has sent billions in tax giveaways to big corporations and the richest Americans.
It’s no secret that Republicans’ have no idea how to “message” their opposition to Democrats’ expanded child tax credit. But we’re going to keep reminding voters that every congressional Republican voted against this measure — while others, like Sununu, have made it clear the Rescue Plan would never have passed with them in Congress.
“Some Republican governors have been touting the funds in the American Rescue Plan and the benefits for their states, even though they criticized the legislation.”

- “A number of Republican governors who criticized Democrats’ COVID-19 relief plan are now happily distributing the money around their states, touting the benefits and taking credit.”
- “In February, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said he would have voted against the rescue package if he had been in the Senate. (Republicans are also recruiting Sununu to run against Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan, who voted for the rescue package.)”
- “But last month, Sununu called it a ‘win’ when his administration announced that it was using some of the money from the ARP to fund child care services in New Hampshire.”
