Nikki Haley Claims “Don’t Say Gay” Law Doesn’t Go Far Enough For Her

Jun 09, 2022

In a bizarre moment during a Georgia rally, 2024 hopeful Nikki Haley took the opportunity to weigh in on the priorities of the national GOP by offering commentary on Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay Bill” – legislation that prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity – suggesting that the legislation didn’t go far enough for her liking.

“They’re talking about this bill in Florida, the Don’t Say Gay bill, where gay wasn’t even mentioned, but you know what it did say? It said you cannot talk about any sort of sexual preference or gender pronouns before 3rd grade,” said Haley. “I didn’t think that went far enough. … We didn’t have sex-ed until 7th grade. And even then, you had to have your parent sign a permission slip. And my dad didn’t sign it.”

This out-of-place statement was clearly an attempt to appeal to get the attention of national Republicans. As 2024 approaches, Haley will desperately try to walk a tight line between appealing to the far-right base of the Republican Party while appeasing Trump, a line she has failed to walk in the past.
