Ashley Hinson accepted donations from the maker of a product that is directly linked to rising cancer rates in Iowa. According to recent reporting from the Iowa Independent, Hinson’s campaign received $6,000 from BAYERPAC, the corporate PAC for Bayer US LLC. Bayer owns Monsanto, the producer of the herbicide RoundUp. The main ingredient in RoundUp, glyphosate, has been linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Iowa has the second-highest and fastest-rising cancer rate in the United States, and 60% of U.S. counties with the highest rates of glyphosate use had above-average non-Hodgkin lymphoma rates.
“Ashley Hinson receiving money from a company causing cancer among her constituents is disappointing but not surprising,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Gus Nathanson. “Her agenda is nothing more than a multi-pronged approach to hurting Iowans, so these donations are par for the course.”
