Ashley Hinson was an outspoken supporter of DOGE’s cuts, yet now she is trying to take credit for the reopening of a Social Security office that only closed in the first place because of DOGE. According to recent reporting from the Iowa Independent, Hinson falsely claimed that the Social Security field office in Decorah reopened largely because of her “relentless advocacy.” The office had been closed since the end of 2025 due to staffing shortages as a direct result of DOGE, which laid off more than 8,000 Social Security officials across the country.
“Ashley Hinson expects her constituents to applaud her, but they know she’s the one who helped make this mess in the first place,” said Gus Nathanson, spokesman for American Bridge 21st Century. “The only reason why the Social Security field office in Decorah closed its doors was because of the reckless actions of a rogue organization that she cheered on, and hundreds of thousands of Iowans are still suffering as a result of Hinson and DOGE.”

- Hinson has been an adamant supporter of DOGE since its creation. She said, “I think that this is exactly what the federal government needs,” in February 2025, and later stated, “It is important that we are doing DOGE at every level,” during a tele-town hall in April of that same year.
- The Social Security field office in Decorah, Iowa had been closed since the end of 2025 due to a lack of staffing.
- According to a report by KCRG-TV9 in Cedar Rapids, the Decorah office had been closed due to the retirement of its sole remaining staff member in late 2025.
- According to the American Federation of Government Employees Council 220, which represents Social Security Administration field employees, the staff reductions created ghost offices in Decorah and eight other locations.
- DOGE’s cuts to the federal workforce were behind the layoffs of more than 8,000 Social Security Administration employees between January 2025 and April 2026, including 32 in Iowa, according to the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
- Those workforce reductions left Social Security field offices across the country critically understaffed.
