ICYMI: Jon Husted Opposes Bipartisan Plan to Lift Social Security Payroll Tax Cap

Jul 07, 2026

Jon Husted publicly denounced a bipartisan plan to make the wealthy pay their fair share into Social Security. According to recent reporting from TiffinOhio, Husted opposed a bipartisan framework to lift the Social Security payroll tax cap, which was co-authored by his fellow Ohio Republican, Bernie Moreno. This marks a rare split between the two Ohio senators, and places Husted firmly against a plan that would meaningfully improve Social Security funding.

“Jon Husted is once again siding with the top 1 percent over Ohio families,” said American Bridge 21st Century Spokesperson Gus Nathanson. “Instead of asking millionaires to pay their fair share, Husted is putting Social Security at risk for everyone else.”

Read more about Husted’s opposition to a bipartisan Social Security improvement effort:

  • Speaking in a June 25 interview on “The Guy Benson Show,” Husted said he shared the goal of shoring up Social Security but rejected the mechanism Moreno laid out with Elizabeth Warren.
  • Moreno and Warren outlined their plan in a New York Times op-ed. The two say they are drafting legislation to remove the cap on wages subject to the 12.4% Social Security payroll tax.
  • Federal trustees projected the Social Security fund will be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032, at which point scheduled benefits would drop to about 78% without congressional action.
    • The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that would cost the average Ohio beneficiary about $487 a month.
  • Independent analysts have said lifting the cap would meaningfully improve solvency and erase roughly half the shortfall and delay insolvency by about 22 years, while cautioning it is not a complete fix.
