ICYMI: Maine GOP Candidate Fuels Dangerous Hoaxes and Attacks Transgender Youth

Jul 06, 2026

As Maine families struggle with rising living costs, healthcare access, and economic uncertainty, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bobby Charles is under fire for spreading debunked conspiracy theories instead of focusing on real issues.

Recent reporting underscores just how far Charles is willing to go to appeal to the far-right fringe:

  • The Advocate: Highlighted Charles’ use of the biblical story of Noah’s Ark to deny transgender identities, quoting him saying, “Noah didn’t take 27 genders of animals. He just took two as far as I remember.” The outlet also reported on Charles comparing transgender youth to children identifying as animals and repeating the false claim that schools provide litter boxes to students who identify as cats and dogs.
  • The Daily Beast: Called Charles’ comments “truly bizarre” and noted he revived the debunked litter box hoax while running to be Maine’s next governor. The outlet quoted Charles saying, “Actually, you’re not a cat, and you will have to go to work, and we’re going to not do this kitty litter crap anymore.”

Instead of offering Maine families real solutions on housing, healthcare, and the economy, Bobby Charles is focused on divisive hoaxes and attacks on transgender kids. Maine deserves a governor that tackles real problems — not one spreading baseless conspiracy theories.
