Trump said he’d bring prices down on day one. Instead, inflation just hit a three-year high.
The Consumer Price Index rose 4.2% over the past year, up from 3.8% in April and the highest annual rate since April 2023. It marks the third straight month inflation has increased. Energy prices jumped 3.9% in a single month and are up 23.5% over the past year.
Also, over the past year:
- Gasoline is up 40.5%.
- Electricity is up 5.9%.
- Groceries and food costs are up 3.1%.
- Shelter costs are up 3.4%.

The man who told voters he would lower costs starting on day one has instead presided over inflation that has climbed month after month after month.
Working families are feeling it in real time. A recent CBS News poll found that three-quarters of Americans say their incomes are not keeping pace with rising prices. While Washington Republicans cherry-pick the data for talking points, Americans see the truth every time they fill their tank or check out at the register.
“Trump isn’t worried about the grocery bill, because he’s not living in the same economy that regular families are living in. He and his billionaire friends are living well, enjoying massive tax cuts while working families’ benefits are cut, and they’re forced to pay more just for the basics,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “The truth is, he was never working for them.
