$60 Million Better Spent Elsewhere

The Secret Service requested an extra $60 million in funding toward its FY 2018 budget, in order to compensate for the Trump family’s extensive travel, plus the costs associated with securing the Trumps’ three primary residences.

Every Trump trip to Mar-a-Lago costs taxpayers more than $3,000,000. And that’s not including the drag on the local government and small business owners. Trump is charging U.S. taxpayers millions while he jets back and forth to Palm Beach, openly running a pay-to-play scheme and selling access to anyone who can foot the $200,000 membership fee.

“Trump proposes gutting crucial economic development, education, and social programs, while vacationing and funneling money into his own pocket on taxpayers’ dime,” said American Bridge President Jessica Mackler. “Trump’s intentions to get rich off the presidency, and at the expense of the American people, have never been more obvious.”

Here are a few alternative uses […]

Spicer Questions: (No) Calm Before The Snowstorm Edition

American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah says, “Has Trump even staffed OPM? Asking for a friend,” and calls on White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to answer the following questions at today’s briefing:

1. How will the Trump Organization’s new Trump trademarks in Mexico influence the President’s effort to renegotiate NAFTA?

2. Did President Trump order Michael Flynn to put ex-FBI agent Brian McCauley on retainer to his consulting firm in October 2016, which was conveniently two weeks after McCauley made a quid-pro-quo allegation against Hillary Clinton?

3. Why hasn’t the White House condemned Rep. Steve King’s comments about Muslim Americans not being equal to other Americans?

4. Do you affirm Donald Trump Jr.’s claim to have “zero” contact with his father despite attending the press event at the White House announcing Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court?

5. Will the White House provide proof that President Trump is donating his $400,000 a year […]

New Muslim Ban, Same As The Old Muslim Ban, Ineffective, Unnecessary, And Racist

American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement on the new version of Donald Trump’s Muslim ban:

“The new ineffective and racist Muslim ban is no different than the old racist and ineffective Muslim ban. Donald Trump is going to terrifying lengths to turn his hate-filled campaign promise to discriminate on the basis of religion into law. The White House has already been told by our own intelligence community this doesn’t make us safer and admitted it wasn’t necessary by delaying its release for political expediency. This regurgitated executive order should be struck down as an executive overreach that threatens our American values.”

Spicer Questions: Sealed Envelope Edition

It’s been awhile, but today White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer is back in action behind the podium and will have to answer for new developments in the ongoing scandal around President Trump’s ties to Russia.

To recap, first Flynn promised to ease sanctions on Russia. Now we learn he received a secret plan from Trump aides to lift sanctions on Russia and allow the country to keep Crimea. Naturally, those aides are immersed in the President’s business, his administration, and have ties to Russia – further raising serious questions that to date the administration has either dodged or worse, lied about.

In response to the ongoing controversy, American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah called on Spicer to answer the following questions at this afternoon’s briefing:

Is the White House considering action on any part of the Russian-Ukrainian peace proposal secretly delivered to former-NSA Michael Flynn from Trump associates Michael Cohen and Felix […]

Statement on Selection of General H.R. McMaster as National Security Adviser

Today American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response to Donald Trump selecting General H.R. McMaster as NSA:

“We wish General H.R. McMaster the best of luck in the chaotic Trump White House. This past week we learned that the Trump campaign was in “constant communication” with Russian intelligence officials and National Security Adviser Flynn may have lied to the FBI about potentially illegal conversations he had with the Russia ambassador before Trump’s inauguration.  A new NSA doesn’t change the need for an independent investigation into the troubling connections of the Trump campaign’s role in disrupting the 2016 elections.”

American Bridge on Steve Mnuchin’s Senate Confirmation Vote

Following Steve Mnuchin’s Senate Confirmation vote, American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“Steve Mnuchin is a Merchant of Financial Mayhem, just like Donald Trump. The former Goldman Sachs executive is best known for putting tens of thousands of families out of their homes which must be why Trump, who rooted for the housing crisis, nominated him. Mnuchin is just one of the many former Wall Street executives to join Donald Trump’s rigged cabinet and will push an extreme agenda to help millionaires and billionaires while selling out hardworking families.

American Bridge Statement on Jeff Sessions’ AG Confirmation

Following Jeff Sessions’ Senate Confirmation vote, American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“In a cabinet full of controversial and reckless nominees, Jeff Sessions might be the worst. He has been credited as the godfather of some of the Trump administration’s most egregious actions and was previously deemed too racist to be a federal judge by the U.S. Senate. Last night was proof that even Republicans know Americans find Sessions unacceptable, but their attempts to silence opposition to his racism and bigotry won’t work.

“The country knows that Senate Republicans are responsible for sending a man Coretta Scott King said would ‘irreparably damage the work of’ her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., to run Department of Justice and unravel a century of progress on civil rights. We will hold them accountable for his agenda.”

Spicer SOS

As Vladimir Putin is flexing his strength with a reignited artillery assault on eastern Ukraine, President Trump took swift action … against an American city, leading public university, and two of our most longstanding allies.

American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah calls on White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to answer the following questions at this afternoon’s briefing:

1. Threatening to invade Mexico?
2. Hanging up on the Australian Prime Minister?
3. Meeting with Chicago gangs?
4. Defunding UC Berkeley?
5. Are you kidding me?

Donald Trump Violates The Constitution On Day One

Donald Trump Violates The Constitution On Day One

Trump’s refusal to sell his stake in his business is causing a constitutional crisis

It has only been a few minutes since Donald Trump raised his right hand and swore to uphold the Constitution, but he has already violated his oath of office. By failing to sell his business and separate himself from innumerable foreign conflicts of interest, Trump is breaking the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause which bars payments from foreign leaders to government officials.

“Donald Trump started Day One of his presidency with a giant target on his back for foreign leaders looking to bribe their way into the Oval Office or dictate national security decisions,” said American Bridge President Jessica Mackler. “But he does not seem to care that this is against the law because it can mean billions for his bottom line.”

The Constitution’s Emoluments Clause is not an outdated relic from another era. […]

Trump’s Budget Director Pick Can’t Manage A Household Budget

Rep. Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s pick to lead Office of Management and Budget, neglected “to pay more than $15,000 in payroll taxes for a household employee,” according to a New York Times report on Mulvaney’s disclosure of the discrepancy to the Senate Budget Committee.

The revelation stains Trump’s already ethically-marred transition just days before his inauguration, and it adds Mulvaney to a growing list of Trump Administration figures (and nominees) including Trump, himself, and Betsy DeVos, who have shady tax records, disclosure errors, or simply a refusal to release their tax returns.

American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah issued the following statement on Mulvaney’s tax discrepancy:

“Trump’s pick for Budget director either purposefully avoided paying taxes he owed for a household employee, or he can’t be trusted to manage his own household budget. I don’t know which is worse, but both are disqualifying. Senators of both parties should call on Mulvaney to remove his name from […]
