DAY 21: Trump Shutdown Devastates American Workers As Senate GOP Refuses to Act

As Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell’s near record-breaking federal government shutdown enters its third week, workers across the country are facing their first payday without a paycheck, squeezing Coast Guard families and leading TSA agents to look for work elsewhere.

We’ll say it again: Mitch McConnell is as much to blame for this shutdown as Donald Trump. McConnell has refused to take up any of the funding bills passed by the House, including measures his Senate unanimously approved in December. He could easily bring those bills to the floor, and likely muster the votes in his caucus to override a veto from Trump. He’d alleviate financial stress for nearly 1 million American workers and also relieve pressure on members up for reelection in 2020.

Instead, McConnell is forcing his caucus to shoulder the shutdown blame as workers and families in their home states endure increasing financial hardships. Here are […]

CLIPS: Chaos and Blame Game Between Trump, Senate Republicans Ramps Up as Shutdown Looms

In 36 hours the federal government will shut down without a bill that continues to fund it, and instead of finding a solution, Senate Republicans and President Trump are busy blaming each other for the mess they’ve created. Instead of working across the aisle to solve this impending disaster — which will close vital government offices, halt paychecks for federal workers, and slow down our economy — Republicans are playing political games and driving toward a cliff.

“Senate Republicans and President Trump can’t stop pointing fingers at each other for a shutdown crisis that’s entirely of their own making, from their refusal to protect Dreamers to their insistence on an ineffective border wall that the President promised Americans they would never have to pay for,” said American Bridge spokesperson Allison Teixeira Sulier. “The reality is that if the government shuts down, it is entirely because of Trump and Republicans’ total inability to govern. They’re in […]

Trumpcare Fails, But The Trump Administration Is Now Pushing Medicare Cuts

Donald Trump is breaking his promises to the American people – again – this time by endorsing cuts to Medicare.  When Donald Trump announced his candidacy for President, he guaranteed that he would not cut Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security.  However, Trumpcare, which died last night, would have broken this promise and slashed Medicaid funding by nearly $800 billion.

Now, just as Trump and Mitch McConnell’s desperate attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement – which would have taken health coverage away from 32 million Americans – also cratered, Trump’s budget director announced that the administration supports the extreme House Republican budget plan, which cuts Medicare.

“As his administration fails the American public, Donald Trump is proving that the pledges he made to voters about improving their lives were worse than empty talk – they were the opposite of what he’d […]

Republican Senate Hopefuls Will Still Have to Answer for Trumpcare

“Whether it’s Trumpcare or repealing the ACA without a replacement, GOP Senators and Senate hopefuls are stuck with their cruel plan to take away health care from millions—like gum stuck to a shoe,” said American Bridge spokesperson Joshua Karp. “Despite Trumpcare’s collapse, GOP leaders around the country have already supported Trumpcare, helped write Trumpcare, and championed numerous disastrous ACA repeal bills that all rip away coverage from Americans who desperately need it, and they’ll have to answer for that next November.”

Let’s play the tape…

Rep. Evan Jenkins voted for AHCA in the House, and has repeatedly voted for ACA repeals.

Rep. Luke Messer voted for ACHA in the House, and has repeatedly voted for ACA repeals.

Rep. Todd Rokita voted for ACHA in the House, and has Read more after the jump.

American Bridge Statement on Growing Opposition to Trumpcare

American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah released the following statement on Trumpcare failing for the second time:

“It’s long past time for the GOP to scrap their partisan plans to repeal the ACA and instead work with Democrats on bipartisan fixes to the existing law.  Tax cuts for the rich are not the solution, and until Republicans come to terms with that reality, Americans are going to hold them accountable for trying to boot millions off of their insurance.”

Donald Trump Prefers Outsourcing Instead Of American Workers

While kicking off ‘Made In America Week’ this morning, the White House couldn’t explain why Trump brand products are still being made overseas — with a spokesperson promising “I will get back to you.”

That’s because Donald Trump built his spurious career by scamming small businesses, shipping jobs overseas, and using foreign labor rather than creating American jobs to build his products.

Outrageously, Trump has even bragged about the “many, many deals, outside of the United States” he and his family have done.  One example of those so-called deals is the Chinese factory that produces his daughter’s line of shoes where pay is as low as a dollar an hour, employees are beaten bloody, and three people investigating the awful conditions went missing.

At, American Bridge has chronicled a litany of times Trump has profited from outsourcing, foreign labor, and at the expense of American workers generally.  […]

Collusion? I Don’t Care, “I Love It” Week Gets Dragged Across the Coals by Editorial Boards

All across the country, local editorial boards are taking Donald Trump to task – on everything from his disastrous climate policies to empty promises on health care to voter suppression tactics thinly disguised as his so-called “voter fraud commission.” That’s in addition to serious condemnation over new evidence of Donald Trump Jr.’s “flat-out wrong” meeting with a Russian operative after more than a year of lies from the President, the campaign, and the White House.

Below is a roundup of what Americans are reading in their local newspapers this week:

Albany Times-Union: Get serious on health care

Mr. Trump seems stuck in campaign mode, no more aware of the complexities of governing than when he declared at a rally last October, “You’re going to have such great health care, at a tiny fraction of the cost — and it’s going to be so easy.”

The last six months have […]

Taxpayer Dollars Are Going, Going, GONE on Trump’s Vacations

Rather than sticking around in Europe for longer than 27 hours so he can begin to rebuild U.S. relationships with France and other vital allies, Trump is flying home to focus on building his personal brand at his New Jersey golf course. It’s his 20th weekend at a Trump property — out of only 24 weekends in his presidency.

“Donald Trump needs to stop vacationing on the taxpayers’ dime and start doing his job. If this low-energy President wants to spend all his time golfing and vacationing, he should do us all a favor and join a retirement community.” —Kevin McAlister, American Bridge spokesperson

On top of using millions of dollars from American taxpayers and the USGA to promote his properties and profit from his personal brand, Trump is facing questions on scandals and his plummeting job approval:

Will he see “high-quality person” Don Jr. for the first time since Junior […]

Trump’s Paris Decision is Bad News For America’s Economy and Working Families

American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response to President Trump pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement, joining Syria and Nicaragua as the only United Nations members to not participate:

“Donald Trump is bankrupting American leadership worldwide like it’s one of his sketchy casinos or fraudulent university. Five times as many Americans are employed in clean and renewable energy jobs than in the fossil fuel industry.  Hundreds of American businesses supported staying in the Paris agreement.  As our drinking water becomes dirtier, Asthma symptoms worsen, and the economy shrinks, Trump’s destructive decisions, including pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, will be to blame.”

More information about how Trump withdrawing from the Paris Agreement will lead to job-killing tariffs on American exports can be found here.

American Bridge On Donald Trump and David Clarke

American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah statement on Trump reportedly considering David Clarke to be Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Partnership and Engagement:

“Sheriff David Clarke is a bigot who has allowed numerous people — including an infant — to die or be brutally tortured in his jails and on his watch. Clarke’s actions and beliefs are directly at odds with American values and have no place in our government at any level. It’s shameful that Clarke still holds a job in law enforcement, and appalling that Trump wants to give him a promotion.”
