New SNAP work requirements take effect today, threatening to cut food assistance for millions of Americans already struggling to put meals on the table. Under the Republican spending bill signed into law last summer, cumbersome work requirements were imposed on, and exemptions were stripped from, the most vulnerable Americans.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates Republican rule changes will rip away benefits from an average of approximately 2.4 million people each month through 2034.
What Trump And Republicans Have Already Done:
- Last year, Trump and Republicans made the largest cuts to SNAP in program history, slashing funding by $186 billion.
- By December, 2.5 million fewer people were receiving food assistance because harmful Republican policy changes pushed them off the rolls. Between the law’s July 2025 signing and February of this year, SNAP participation nationwide fell by more than 3.5 million people, nearly a 9% decline.
- Cruelly, Republicans stripped exemptions from the new requirements for homeless individuals, veterans, and young adults who aged out of foster care.
Republicans Rigged The System To Force States To Kick People Off:
- To minimize the costs they will be required to pay under the megabill’s cost-shift provisions, states are being incentivized to quickly adopt policies that result in eligible households losing critical benefits to administrative burdens, and more than 700,000 children losing food assistance.
- Starting in October 2027, most states will be required to pay a share of SNAP food benefit costs for the first time, potentially totaling hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars in new costs each year for the largest states. States facing those costs will have to make tough decisions like raising taxes, gutting other services, or pushing even more eligible families off food assistance entirely.
Under Trump, Groceries Are Becoming Unaffordable:
- Inflation surged to a three-year high of 3.8 percent in April, rising faster than wages, driven by Trump’s massive tariffs tax and the war in Iran.
- In April, grocery prices rose by the highest rate in nearly four years, and economists say the impact of the Iran war will only add to pressures into 2027.
- One-tenth of American households report not having enough food to eat or that their children missed meals. More than a third of households reported dipping into savings to pay for groceries.
- One in four U.S. adults now pays for groceries with a credit card and carries that balance forward – essentially taking out a high-interest loan just to fill the refrigerator.
- Farm diesel prices have surged 72 percent since late February as the Iran war disrupted energy markets and shipping routes, while urea fertilizer prices jumped 55 percent.
- A survey of 5,700 farmers found 70 percent cannot afford all the fertilizer they need this season, and nearly 60 percent say their finances have deteriorated due to rising fertilizer and fuel costs.
