NEW STUDY: Trump Forces the Biggest Tax Hike in a Generation and Guts the Safety Net

Feb 10, 2026

New analysis by the Tax Foundation shows that Donald Trump’s tariffs increased taxes on US households by an average of $1,000 last year and will cost families another $1,300 in 2026.

President Trump has effectively imposed the largest tax increase on working Americans’ income since 1993 through his massive tariff tax hikes on the vital goods families buy every day.

At the same time, his policies are slashing critical support for health carefood assistance, child careeducation (including special education), agricultural programs, and more – all to pay for huge tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.

“Trump is responsible for every extra cent that is pulled from the pockets of American consumers as companies pass the costs of his tariffs on to them,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “While people struggle to keep up, Trump is gaslighting families across the nation, insisting that the economy is fine, prices are low, and that prosperity is just around the corner. The reality is that, for most households, prosperity will never come because of Trump’s policies that raise costs, limit opportunity, and funnel enormous tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans who benefit at the expense of everyone else.”
