NEW: Voters Reject Maria Lazar’s “Independent” Facade

Apr 07, 2026

Wisconsin voters saw through Maria Lazar’s campaign and rejected her attempt to present herself as an “independent” while building a campaign backed and powered by Republican operatives and election deniers.

Throughout the race, Lazar tried to convince voters she would bring independence and impartiality to the court. But her campaign told a different story — backed by Republican elected officials, built with a network of GOP consultants, and supported by allies tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Lazar praised the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade — a decision that has jeopardized the health care of millions of women across the country — and repeatedly refused to give straight answers on abortion, signaling openness to further restrictions while avoiding accountability.

In the end, voters weren’t buying it.

Wisconsin voters made clear they expect honesty and independence from their justices, and Lazar wasn’t it.
