American Bridge 21st Century released the latest installment of its Reports From The American Front Line video series today, documenting how Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans’ refusal to extend healthcare tax credits is driving premiums higher and pushing families out of coverage altogether.
Even more pain is on the way next year. Insurers are already lining up double-digit premium hikes for 2027 ACA Marketplace plans. The median proposed increase is 14 percent for next year, putting premiums on track to climb more than a third since 2025.
That spike traces straight back to one decision: Trump and MAGA Republicans let the ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits expire at the end of 2025 and refused to bring them back. That choice alone has already pushed deductibles up roughly $1,000 per person and forced healthier families out of the Marketplace altogether.
Republicans ended the subsidies millions rely on to afford coverage, all while they gutted healthcare programs to bankroll tax breaks for the wealthy. Now, working families are footing the bill.
“Republicans had a choice between protecting people’s healthcare and protecting their own donors, and they picked the donors,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Now families are lying awake doing math that they shouldn’t have to: which prescription to skip this month, which checkup to put off, whether coverage is even worth keeping anymore. Trump and Republicans let healthcare tax credits die, and they knew exactly what would happen when they did. They just didn’t think anyone would notice. We’re going to make sure everyone does.”
Reports From The American Front Line is part of American Bridge’s broader Republican Impacts Project, which uses extensive research to highlight the local effects of Republican policies and hold policymakers accountable for decisions that harm American families.
