Last year, Jeff Flake was quick to call out members of his own party, saying Republicans must be prepared to purge racists, and those who support any type of religious test. Now that Donald Trump’s racist campaign rhetoric has become official government policy–and held hundreds of people in custody over the weekend–will Jeff Flake stand up to Trump’s attacks to protect our national security?
Below is a statement by Jessica Mackler, President of American Bridge 21st Century:
“There is no grey area on Donald Trump’s Muslim ban. It is not only a racist and bigoted policy, it is downright dangerous and puts American lives at risk. Yet, Sen. Flake’s lip service does nothing to stop Trump from detaining a soldier who helped the U.S. military defeat Taliban forces in Baghdad and Mosul, senior citizens with lawfully-granted visas, or hundreds of others who could still be in custody.
“Sen. Flake must sign on and co-sponsor Sen. Feinstein’s bill to repeal Trump’s Muslim ban–short of that, he’s only emboldening our enemies and enabling Donald Trump to trample all over our core American values, alienate our allies, and threaten our national security.”
Jul. 2016: Flake Called For Muslim Ban Supporters To Be Purged From GOP
New York Times: Flake “Suggested A Purge Of Racists” And Muslim Ban Supporters “From The Party That Would Recall The Expulsion Of The John Birch Society.” According to the New York times “Senator Jeff Flake, Republican of Arizona, an outspoken critic of Mr. Trump who plans to skip the convention, said more bluntly that the party should be prepared to break with Mr. Trump and the voters who have cheered his pledges to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and ban Muslims from entering the country. ‘You’ve got to hope that, if this race keeps going the way it looks to be going, that it’s enough of a jolt to wake people up and say we don’t want to be relegated to second place in every future presidential campaign,’ Mr. Flake said. He suggested a purge of racists from the party that would recall the expulsion of the John Birch Society, a fringe nationalist group, from Republican ranks a half-century ago. ‘Those who want a Muslim ban, those who will disparage individuals or groups — yes, we ought to, we need to,’ Mr. Flake said.” [New York Times, 7/17/16]
