Every Republican senator who votes to confirm Todd Blanche is casting a vote against reproductive rights for women in their state and every other state in the country.
After several days of drama, Senate Republicans are lining up to confirm an attorney general nominee who lied to their own committee about his plans to crush abortion access nationwide.
Blanche privately pledged to anti-abortion activists that he would make sure Dobbs becomes “permanent in every single state,” a commitment that goes considerably further than the careful hedging he offered the Senate Judiciary Committee while under oath. DOJ has since confirmed that his real target is mail-order abortion medication, the method that now accounts for the majority of abortions performed in the United States.
Trump and his extreme MAGA allies have supported strict abortion crackdowns since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, and it has had deadly impacts for women across the country. A July 2026 study out of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found that pregnant women in total ban states are nearly twice as likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period, with the risk for Black patients more than three times higher than their white counterparts.
The Population Reference Bureau’s January 2026 review of Texas hospital data found a 50 percent jump in sepsis rates during second-trimester hospitalizations after the state’s six-week ban took effect. Doctors in states with abortion bans have been left guessing how sick a patient has to get before treating a miscarriage or a pregnancy complication is legally safe, and 40 percent of OB-GYNs in ban states report the laws now constrain their ability to treat miscarriages and pregnancy-related emergencies at all.
In addition to worse care, people across the country have been criminally investigated or arrested for allegedly ending their own pregnancies or helping someone else do so, and reporting has tracked women who were arrested after miscarriages that had nothing to do with an abortion at all.
None of that happened by accident. It happened because the administration has supported and celebrated attempts at the state level to restrict abortion access, and now Senate Republicans are set to confirm an attorney general who plans to take those restrictions to a whole new level.
“Blanche’s true plan for reproductive rights is now on the record. The only remaining question was whether Republicans would treat getting caught lying about a national abortion crackdown as a problem,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “The answer from Senate Republicans is no; he will be confirmed because of it.”
