Joe Heck Sold Out To The Gun Lobby And It’s Costing Him Big League (New Audio)

According to Public Policy Polling, Joe Heck’s opposition to prohibiting terror suspects from purchasing firearms, as well as his opposition to background check legislation, is costing the congressman major support in Nevada. Heck won’t abandon these unpopular positions, however, because the gun lobby is pumping big dollars into his campaign (voters don’t like that either.)

(Full polling memo from PPP here)

The NRA is propping up Heck with a major investment:

And they know what they’re getting in return.

Days after this infusion of cash, Heck visited the NRA-ILA in Reno and thanked the NRA for opposing Nevada’s popular Question 1.

“So thank you, thank you for what you’re doing for the election, for this country, on behalf of the NRA, to defeat Question 1. Uh, I appreciate it. I look forward to coming back up here…”

Heck is putting his own electoral prospects ahead of the will of […]

Rubio, Portman, Burr And Johnson Vote Against GOP-Led Effort To Stop Terrorists From Buying Guns

Just 24 hours after reversing course and announcing his reelection campaign — and less than two weeks after discussing the possibility of doing so at the scene of a mass-shooting — Marco Rubio’s already voted against a GOP-led effort to keep terrorists from buying guns.

Give Rubio some credit: it’s a miracle that the chronically-absent Trump supporter showed up for the vote at all — after all, he just yesterday celebrated the launch of his reelection campaign by blowing off a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.

But Marco Rubio’s vote to table a GOP-led measure to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists exemplifies the extent to which Rubio sees the Senate as nothing more than a stepping stone to a 2020 White House run.

Rubio wasn’t alone in his political cowardice and willingness to put the NRA agenda over the priorities of 85% of the American people. Rubio was joined by Senators Rob Portman, […]

The Worst Kind Of Deja Vu: GOP Senators Reject Common Sense Gun Safety Bills

Today, the following GOP senators voted against legislation that would help prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns:

Roy Blunt, Missouri
John Boozman, Arkansas
Richard Burr, North Carolina
Chuck Grassley, Iowa
Ron Johnson, Wisconsin
John McCain, Arizona
Rand Paul, Kentucky
Rob Portman, Ohio

Marco Rubio, Florida

Pat Toomey, Pennsylvania

These GOP senators also voted against closing the background check loophole for guns bought online and at gun shows:

Kelly Ayotte, New Hampshire
Roy Blunt, Missouri
John Boozman, Arkansas
Richard Burr, North Carolina
Chuck Grassley, Iowa
Ron Johnson, Wisconsin
John McCain, Arizona
Rand Paul, Kentucky
Rob Portman, Ohio

Marco Rubio, Florida

Pat Toomey, Pennsylvania

“These are common sense measures, but Senate Republicans refuse to take action against gun violence,” said American Bridge President Jessica Mackler. “Instead of supporting legislation that could make real change, GOP leaders introduced sham legislation that will do little to prevent another mass shooting and will still make it possible for suspected terrorists to get their hands on guns. The GOP should be ashamed that they continue to cower and risk Americans’ safety rather […]

Election Year Ayotte Desperately Reverses Course On Guns For Terrorists

In December, Senator Kelly Ayotte voted against a measure that would have prevented suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms.

Seven months later, Election Year Ayotte has reportedly reversed course and decided to not only support a near-identical amendment from Senator Feinstein, but also introduce legislation of her own that would have the same effect.

Why? Because a new poll shows her losing and — most importantly — that 89% of New Hampshire voters “support closing loopholes so that terror suspects cannot legally purchase weapons.”

Senator Ayotte’s in an election year. That’s why she’s pretending to have come around on common sense gun safety laws. Ayotte hasn’t had a moment of clarity — she’s just going through the motions of pretending to share Granite Staters’ priorities in a desperate effort to hold on to her Senate seat.

Off The Prompter, Off His Rocker: Trump Goes Old School Unhinged In Georgia

Donald Trump was off the prompter and way off-message today in Atlanta, Georgia. For an hour and ten minutes, Trump meandered aimlessly through his favorite talking points: Polls (which are now “false”), anti-immigrant sentiments, eating hamburgers in lieu of state dinners, tent safety, and railing on Republican leadership.

Noticeably missing from Trump’s blathering was any mention of efforts to prevent those on terrorist watch lists to purchase firearms. In fact, the only mention of guns made by Trump was to suggest that more people should carry them in bars (and a brief aside to make some gun sounds.)

Portman Puts Partisanship Over Keeping Guns Out of the Hands of Suspected Terrorists

Senator Rob Portman is politically posturing on the terror watch list gun ban — and it’s going very, very poorly. Yesterday, Portman admitted that he didn’t know that he voted against preventing suspected terrorists from purchasing guns in December:

Portman initially maintained that the Feinstein amendment only applied to the federal no-fly list – a smaller list of people and had no due-process provisions. But after checking with an aide, the senator yielded that “maybe we had this wrong.”

When reporters asked if he would support the gun safety measure now, the senator “did not give a direct answer.”

Portman’s irresponsibility on this matter is incredulous. Forty-nine innocent Americans lives were taken on Sunday, yet the senator is still hedging his bets. Portman’s confusion is not simply a case of incompetence — he and his office are waiting for a signal from Washington Republicans. Portman’s partisanship trumps the safety of Ohioans and Americans from […]

Forecasting Donald’s Predictable NRA Meeting

Donald Trump announced this morning that he plans to meet with the National Rifle Association to voice support for a restriction on the ability of people on the FBI’s terrorist watch list or the no-fly list to purchase firearms.

Don’t be fooled, Donald Trump has made his position on firearm restrictions explicitly clear. During the January Republican debate in North Charleston, South Carolina, moderator Maria Bartiromo asked Trump, “Are there any circumstances that you think we should be limiting gun sales of any kind in America?” Trump answered succinctly, “No.”

WATCH:

Trump is simply trying to exploit a popular position in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. Trump is proud of his NRA endorsement; Trump and the NRA truly deserve each other.

Jeb Bush’s America

Anderson Cooper described in great detail the tweet Jeb Bush’s team sent with a picture of a gun inscribed with Jeb Bush’s name. Jeb, in turn, mentioned his belief that we should protect the second amendment.

Yet, between his infamous “stuff happens” comment regarding mass shootings, and this week’s cryptic tweet, we can safely say that should Bush become president, he’ll continue to refuse to take meaningful action to curb gun violence.

WATCH: Vote Chris Christie For An Angrier Version Of Donald Trump

If you like Donald Trump, but wish he were a little bit angrier — a little more of a bully — consider Chris Christie. That’s what American Bridge is reminding Iowa and New Hampshire voters with two new targeted web ads highlighting Christie’s extreme anti-women’s health views and his opposition to measures to reduce gun violence.

Just last week, Christie vetoed two common-sense gun safety bills — one of which would’ve prevented convicted gang members and carjackers from possessing guns. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg… it’s “Gun Crazy Christie” we’re talking about here:

Roe v. Wade-opponent Chris Christie’s fierce anti-choice rhetoric and consistent vetoing of women’s health funding are even more extreme than his hardline refusal to act to curb gun violence. Christie brags about defunding Planned Parenthood in New Jersey — cutting millions of dollars from women’s health services — and he’s proud that he’s vetoed subsequent restorative funding legislation over seven times. The […]

Another Day, Another Two Common-Sense Gun Safety Bills Vetoed By Chris Christie

In the Party of Trump, controlled by a right-wing, red meat-craving base with xenophobic tendencies, the more extreme a candidate’s policies and rhetoric, the better he or she does in the polls.

That’s why gun-crazy NJ Governor Chris Christie, who just vetoed another TWO gun safety bills, is just one point out of third-place in New Hampshire.

A big part of Christie’s right-wing appeal is his hard-line opposition to common-sense measures to curb gun violence. As governor, Christie has vetoed a number of gun-safety bills, including a .50 caliber rifle ban. Christie’s also elected to pardon multiple individuals charged with gun crimes — amounting to six pardons in 2015, alone.

Just today, Governor Christie’s vetoed two more common-sense gun safety measures:

The first would have “[required] smart guns be sold by all retailers in New Jersey.”

And the second, would’ve prevented carjackers, racketeers, and individuals convicted of “terroristic threats” from “owning a possessing […]
