Retaliatory Canadian tariffs on hundreds of American goods take effect today, the latest escalation in a trade war with one of America’s closest allies that Donald Trump started, that he cannot win, and that ordinary Americans will be stuck paying for.
Rather than work to find a last-minute deal and protect American families from higher costs, Trump spent the weekend trolling Canada on Truth Social, posting AI-slop fantasy maps suggesting America would take over the entire continent of North America and a cartoon antagonising Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The facts on Trump’s Canada trade war:
- Canada’s new tariffs, ranging from 15 to 50 percent, hit over 700 American products including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
- The tariffs are a direct response to Trump’s own 50 percent tariffs on roughly $27.6 billion of Canadian goods.
- American businesses imported nearly $382 billion worth of goods from Canada last year, meaning a trade war of this scale touches nearly every corner of the U.S. economy.
- The average American family has already paid more than $3,800 in tariff and energy costs.
Trump is picking a fight with our ally Canada while he still can’t close out the war in Iran, and Americans are footing the bill for both.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has choked global energy supply routes and sent prices soaring: the national average price of diesel hit an all-time high of $5.85 a gallon last week, and nitrogen-based fertilizer costs are up nearly 45 percent since the war began, driving up what it costs farmers to grow food.
Now Trump is stacking a trade war with a longtime ally on top of that mess, guaranteeing higher prices on lumber, cars, dairy, and electronics for families already stretched thin by grocery bills, housing costs, and everyday goods that have climbed on his watch.
“Imagine spending the holiday weekend playing emperor on Truth Social instead of actually governing. Trump can’t even end the hot war he started with Iran, but we’re supposed to indulge his crackpot fantasies of taking over the western hemisphere,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Meanwhile, the boring and unglamorous work of keeping prices down for people who don’t have the luxury of ignoring their grocery bill goes undone by a president who promised to do so on his first day in office.”
