One year after Donald Trump declared his so-called “Liberation Day,” Nevada families aren’t celebrating — they’re struggling.
Tariffs have hit Nevadans especially hard, raising costs, cutting into tourism, and putting pressure on working families. What was promised as an economic reset has instead slowed job growth and put Nevada’s core industries at risk.
Yet Governor Joe Lombardo has stayed aligned with the same policies fueling the damage — brushing off the impact by saying Nevadans may need to “feel some pain,” not once, but twice.
Since Liberation Day, the consequences have become clear:
- Tariffs have already cost U.S. households an average of $1,000 — and are expected to cost $1,300 this year — forcing Nevada families to cut back on essentials as small businesses raise prices and lose customers.
- Tariffs have already driven down international travel, with roughly 2.5 million annual visitors from Canada and Mexico at risk and thousands of Nevada hospitality jobs on the line.
- Las Vegas businesses are already shut down, including Hudl Brewing Company, as tourism dropped — with Canadian visitation down 20% and overall traffic down 4.4% year-over-year.
- Small businesses are facing sharp cost increases, with some goods doubling or tripling in price — including rice rising from $24 to $46 and coconut milk from $24 to $76.
- Tariffs have increased material costs, slowing construction and making Nevada’s housing affordability crisis even worse.
“After a year of higher prices, fewer visitors, and growing economic uncertainty, Nevadans are being told to ‘feel some pain’ while Governor Lombardo continues to back the same policies that caused it,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Tiffiany Vaughn. “Families don’t need pain, they need leaders who will stand up for them and lower costs, not make excuses for an agenda that’s driving the state’s economy in the wrong direction.”
One year later, “Liberation Day” hasn’t delivered relief — it’s delivered higher costs, economic instability, and a governor who refuses to change course.
