Donald Trump doesn’t seem bothered that he’s blown past his promise to end the war with Iran in four to six weeks. As the war entered its sixth month this week, Trump posted an AI-generated image declaring “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 2026” and told reporters he is “not in a hurry” to end a war he once said would last weeks.
Meanwhile, Americans have paid for the war not only at the pump and the grocery store, but in the precious lives lost due to the conflict.
The human cost:
- According to the Pentagon’s own casualty database, 18 U.S. service members have been killed and more than 750 wounded since Operation Epic Fury began.
- Every one of those service members and their families were told this war would be over fast.
The financial cost to American households:
- Moody’s Analytics has estimated the full cost to the average household, counting military spending, higher interest rates, and higher prices for gas and groceries, at more than $1,200.
- Gas prices have surged from $2.98 a gallon before the war to more than $4.09 today, and diesel has climbed even further, driving up the cost of everything trucked or shipped.
- Americans have already paid an estimated $87 billion in extra fuel costs since the war began, more than $660 per household.
Trump has shrugged off the toll the war is having on American families, saying that he’d never apologize for sending gas prices skyrocketing and claiming that fallen soldiers supported the war. Even worse, after six months, he still has no timeline for ending the war he started.
“The past six months have been a case study in what presidential failure looks like. Trump built his campaign on ending wars, not prolonging them indefinitely while the costs pile up with no exit in sight. He’s created a mess that he has no plan or sense of urgency to clean up,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Ordinary families are stretched thin and can’t absorb six more months of this, but Trump doesn’t seem bothered either way – leaving us stuck trying to navigate an affordability crisis he doesn’t care to fix.”
