Today marks the 200th day of Donald Trump’s war with Iran, a war he told Americans would be finished in a matter of weeks. Last week he handed voters a new deadline, predicting the fighting will stop “immediately after the election.” Families have spent 200 days paying for this war, and the Trump administration is now telling them the finish line is at least two months away.
Here is what 200 days of Trump’s war has cost the people who never got a vote on it:
- Gas is averaging $4.31 a gallon, up from $2.98 before the war began, and drivers just paid the highest Labor Day prices ever recorded.
- Diesel broke $6 a gallon for the first time in American history, a 60% jump since the war started that raises the price of nearly everything moving by truck, train, or tractor.
- Inflation is stuck at 3.4% with fuel driving roughly a third of last month’s increase, well above what working families can afford to absorb.
- Eighteen American service members have been killed and more than 750 wounded, a toll so uncomfortable for this administration that the Pentagon’s own public accounting of casualties quietly revised the numbers downward.
The country has made up its mind. Trump’s approval has sunk to 32% while just 25% say he is handling this war well, and support for the war itself has fallen to 31% as 83% now expect it to drag on indefinitely. Even the base he was counting on has started to sour, with strong approval of his handling of the war collapsing 21 points among MAGA Republicans.
Republicans on the ballot are feeling every bit of it. Democrats lead the generic ballot by five points while Republicans in competitive races try to distance themselves from a war they supported from the start.
“At 200 days in, it isn’t just a question of when the war will end, but a question of why it hasn’t ended as quickly as Trump and Republicans said it would earlier in the year. After it was clear that Trump would blow past the six-week war he originally forecasted, his administration hasn’t shown urgency to end a conflict that has sent prices sky-high for American families who are already struggling to get by in Trump’s economy,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “All this administration has done is chase headlines instead of solutions to the real problems facing families each day. Whether it’s rising gasoline costs or getting priced out of healthcare, families are facing real problems that Trump and Republicans continue to ignore.”
