VIDEO: DeSantis Defends D’Souza, Wants to Keep Him as Headliner for Florida GOP Debate

May 07, 2018

Last week, the Republican Party of Florida announced that convicted felon and right-wing conspiracy theorist Dinesh D’Souza would headline an event that will also feature a debate between the Republican candidates for Florida Governor. D’Souza made national headlines earlier this year when he mocked survivors of the Parkland shooting.

Fox News Contributor and Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate for Governor Ron DeSantis initially tried to “no comment” his way out of the scandal. But in a rare appearance in the state of Florida last week, DeSantis was forced to give reporters an answer. Unsurprisingly, DeSantis stood up for D’Souza and said he would oppose disinviting him from the event. While his Republican opponent, special interest insider Adam Putnam, put out a statement criticizing D’Souza’s comments, Putnam has not canceled his appearance at the debate.

“It’s unfortunately not surprising that Ron DeSantis would defend a crackpot conspiracy theorist who bullied the Parkland survivors,” said American Bridge spokesperson Zach Hudson. “Meanwhile, like a typical politician, Adam Putnam is trying to have it both ways by criticizing D’Souza’s comments but legitimizing them by sharing the stage with him. The Republican Primary for Governor continues to be a race to the bottom of who is more out of touch with Florida voters.”
