Donald Trump and the Republican Party promised they wouldn’t cut Social Security, but they lied. Trump took a hatchet to the Social Security Administration (SSA) over the last month, leaving it in a state of chaos. Trump is firing thousands of SSA employees, closing over two dozen SSA offices, and deleting services for Americans, including the option to verify your identity with the SSA by phone.Â
Now, retirees, people with disabilities, and millions more are stuck in limbo, waiting for checks that may come late, if at all — all because Trump and his allies are determined to slash Social Security to the bone.
Trump nominated Frank Bisignano, a corporate executive with zero government experience, to lead the SSA and finish the job of betraying the middle class. Bisignano will face questions from the Senate Committee on Finance today as part of his confirmation to the Trump administration.
As CEO of Fiserv, Bisignano raked in $28 million in 2023 alone while overseeing wave after wave of brutal layoffs, firing thousands of workers just to pad profits. Fiserv laid off thousands of employees in 2021, 2022, and 2024.
Bisignano’s track record is clear — he wasn’t asked to join the Trump administration to serve the public. He was asked to join to do what he does best: cut, gut, and destroy the financial security of working people. This time, he’ll do it to Social Security – because that’s exactly what Trump and his billionaire buddies want.
For Trump, what Bisignano lacks in government experience, he makes up for with blind loyalty to the extreme far-right MAGA agenda and a talent for firing hard-working people. Trump wanted someone who wouldn’t blink when it came time to slash benefits, close offices, and sell off what’s left of the SSA to corporate interests.
This is a calculated attack on the working Americans who were promised their Social Security would be safe. Trump swore he wouldn’t touch it — but he’s gutting it right now, right in front of us.
