Following the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to implement an abortion ban from 1864, Republican AZ-01 Rep. David Schweikert lamented that the abortion referendum, which Arizonans were on the verge of getting on the ballot to codify the right to an abortion, was “extreme” and that the only reason there is even a move for an abortion referendum is to drive “turnout.”
But Schweikert didn’t stop there, and had the audacity to claim that, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that on issue of abortion “society is moving our [the GOP’s] way,” and that “I actually believe this is sort of just a an issue of chipping away and winning hearts and minds.”
In response, American Bridge 21st Century Spokesperson Philip Shulman released the following statement:
“Roe was overturned and extreme abortion bans have been put in place because of Republican politicians like David Schweikert who have spent their career trying to roll back reproductive freedoms.”
Schweikert previously said he was “pleased” that Roe was overturned and co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act six times.
