After decades of loading the courts with extremists, Republicans realize their long-held goal of overturning Roe, eliminating abortion rights and access for millions
In response to today’s decision by a Republican majority of justices on the United States Supreme Court plans to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, American Bridge 21st Century Co-Chair and former President of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards and American Bridge President Jessica Floyd have released the following statements:
“Today is one of the darkest days in American history. Five judges appointed by Republicans ended a nearly fifty-year-old constitutional right to legal abortion. This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Cecile Richards. “The Republican Party has made ending access to safe and legal abortion a litmus test and guiding principle for their party. Now that Roe has been overturned – this sets the precedent for all rights and protections that Americans hold dear to be taken away by right-wing extremists like the ones that sit on the Supreme Court. This sick and cynical strategy is causing severe harm to women and families all over this country – particularly in marginalized communities. An overwhelming majority of Americans want abortion to be left up to a pregnant person and their doctor – this decision ends that guarantee. Republican politicians have put the government in charge of people’s personal medical decisions and we know they will not stop there.”
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is devastating to Americans all over the country seeking reproductive health care,” said Jessica Floyd. “As the largest research and tracking operation in Democratic and progressive politics, American Bridge is communicating to voters exactly what Republicans are doing to take away abortion care. After the leaked Roe decision, we mobilized to launch Repro-files.com – a centralized research hub, containing tracking footage and information on Republicans at every elected level who have taken positions to end abortion access and restrict reproductive rights. Republicans are turning their backs on American women, pregnant people, and families – voters are going to know about it.”
According to a poll conducted by American Bridge, EMILY’s List, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, making abortion illegal is deeply unpopular. This poll found that voters, by a 71-point margin, said they would be more likely to vote for a Democrat who favors leaving the decision on abortion up to a woman and her doctor and opposes efforts to ban abortion than a Republican who favors making abortion illegal.
American Bridge is fighting back and holding Republicans accountable with the launch of a new website: Repro-files.com. Repro-files.com will serve as a centralized research hub, containing tracking footage and information on Republicans at every elected level who have taken positions to end abortion access and restrict reproductive rights and health care options.
