Last week, the Republican-controlled Arizona state legislature passed a new restrictive abortion ban that strips Arizonans of rights they have held for more than 50 years. According to CNN, the law “is similar to a Mississippi ban that is currently before the Supreme Court and seeks to overturn Roe v. Wade.”
The bill is now headed to the office of Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who has signed every piece of anti-abortion legislation that has reached his desk. So far, Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidates — Kari Lake, Matt Salmon, and Karrin Taylor Robson — have not said anything about this vote, but in the past, have supported overturning Roe v Wade and banning abortion completely:
- Frontrunner and conspiracy theorist Kari Lake called for a “carbon copy” of the Texas vigilante-style abortion ban — which does not include exceptions for rape or incest — and said falsely that in Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court “engaged in legislative policymaking and fabricated a right to an abortion.”
- One of her primary opponents, failed statewide candidate Matt Salmon, has also said he loves the Texas bill and supports the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
- Karrin Taylor Robson called the Texas abortion ban a “victory” and said the fight to overturn Roe v. Wade, is “just beginning.”
Republicans running for governor in Arizona are taking the national threats to Roe v. Wade as an opportunity to push for even more restrictive and draconian anti-choice laws. And now, the Arizona GOP and its gubernatorial candidates are about to get what they’ve always wished for — a deeply unpopular, undemocratic, and dangerous bill that ends access to safe and legal abortions.
