AZ Republicans Put Guns Ahead of Public Safety

Sep 10, 2020

American Bridge 21st Century launched a new “In Their Own Words” series to remind voters how Republican candidates running for the Arizona Legislature have pandered to gun extremists despite voters supporting stricter gun laws by a striking 8:1 margin

Wendy Rogers, running for LD-6:

  • Rogers: “I’m against red flag laws.” Moderator: “So you don’t believe they have any effect in keeping guns out of the hands of people that shouldn’t be owning them?” Rogers: “Well, you know, who decides on shouldn’t and should?” (7/23/20, LINK
  • “Be very careful and vigilant and discerning when you see something like a school safety bill trying to wind its way through the state legislature.” (8/6/18, LINK
  • “Until we’re able to prevent the school, church and shopping mall shootings by allowing the arming of the citizenry in our counties, we will continue to have problems.” (1/2/20, LINK

Rep. Anthony Kern, LD-20:

  • “You have a shooting, a mass shooting and right away they go after the guns. Well, what about a knife attack… What about a truck attack?… What you see now is repercussions of what we did in the last fifty years and that’s take God out.” (12/12/19, LINK
  • “It’s all gonna be about safe schools, keep kids safe, blah blah blah.” (12/11/19, LINK)
  • “If you ever see any red flags laws or any NPV laws, storm the capitol.” (12/11/2019, LINK

Rep. Walt Blackman, LD-6:

  • “I got attacked by some liberal lefts because I went after Black Lives Matter… so we had these great hats made and it’s ‘Black Guns Matter’ and it’s got an AR with a scope on it.” (7/17/20, LINK
  • “… that same statue increases red flag laws that hurt folks that are veterans like myself. Someone gets in an argument with a neighbor and that neighbor makes a claim or calls the police, that means that that judge — without due process —  can not only take away your firearm, but detain you for up to 72 hours.” (8/25/20, LINK
  • “If our state flips to blue, we’re talking at least ten years before we can do anything to get it back… Ten years of bills like SB1624 and SB1625 that take away your Second Amendment right to own a firearm and puts you in a category of a third-degree felony if you own anything more than a .22.” (8/6/20, LINK)
