According to the American Independent, Missouri Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Billy Long yesterday shamelessly used last week’s horrific mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, to justify Republicans’ push to ban abortion.
When asked whether Republicans will stop obstructing Democratic efforts to end gun violence, Long instead went “back to abortion,” exploiting the tragedy to attack Americans’ constitutional right to abortion access.
It’s no surprise that Long — like the rest of his party — is refusing to stand up to the gun lobby and back gun violence prevention measures. Nor is it any surprise that Long is cravenly exploiting the Uvalde mass shooting to advance his party’s anti-abortion agenda. On the campaign trail, Long has said it’s time to “abort Roe v. Wade” and his fellow primary opponents have likewise advocated for zero-exception abortion bans:
- Attorney General Eric Schmitt signed Missouri onto a brief supporting Mississippi’s highly-restrictive abortion ban that includes no exceptions for rape or incest
- Former disgraced Governor Eric Greitens has said Roe v. Wade should be “sent to the ash heap of history.”
- Rep. Vicky Hartzler has said the Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade.
- Mark McCloskey called for a total ban outlawing all abortions with no exceptions for teen rape and incest victims.
Nationally, 2022 U.S. Senate candidates uniformly oppose abortion rights and back hardline bans to outlaw abortion, with many even calling for a federal ban. And Long’s latest comments make it clear that Republicans plans to take away abortion rights are only going to ramp up in the months ahead.
