Today, the Arizona Supreme Court overturned the state’s 15-week abortion ban and instituted an even more extreme ban from 1864, which could jail abortion providers for two to five years and makes no exceptions for rape or incest. The all GOP-appointed court has merely been following the lead of Arizona’s loudest and staunchest anti-abortion rights politicians.
- AZ-01: Representative David Schweikert said he was “pleased” about overturning Roe v. Wade, and previously co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act.
- AZ-02: Representative Eli Crane called overturning Roe a “massive victory” and praised the “states powers” they now had to regulate — and ban — abortion.
- AZ-06: Representative Juan Ciscomani, who cheered the overturning of Roe and said, with regards to abortion policy, that “these policies should be set by the states.”
- U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake called the extreme ban from 1864 a “great law” and called for the end of Roe v Wade.
In response to the court decision and the Arizona GOP’s attacks on Roe, American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Philip Shulman released the following statement:
“David Schweikert, Eli Crane, Juan Ciscomani, and Kari Lake need to answer if they still believe Roe v. Wade should have been overturned in light of what the Arizona Supreme Court just did. More people are going to die as a result of this court decision, which these candidates helped pave the path for with their continued assault on reproductive freedoms.”
