Today, in observance of the 49th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision which upheld abortion rights in the United States, American Bridge 21st Century Co-Chair Cecile Richards has released the following statement:
“Forty-nine years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court announced their decision in Roe v. Wade, the Texas case that legalized abortion nationwide. The case codified a right that the majority of Americans believe in: that decisions about pregnancy are personal, and should not be made by politicians. The overwhelming majority of Americans support access to safe and legal abortion. But, the Republican Party has been fighting to overturn our rights and are on the verge of doing so with a Supreme Court dominated by republican appointees.
“On this anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we’re reminded of how much is at stake. And We are ready for the tough fight ahead to keep abortion legal. We will hold Republicans accountable for their disastrous anti-choice agenda at the ballot box by organizing and electing Democratic leaders up and down the ballot this November and beyond.”
