Former Planned Parenthood president and American Bridge 21st Century Co-Chair Cecile Richards joined ABC Live to discuss Justice Breyer’s retirement and the impact it will have on Roe v. Wade, as well as the 2022 midterm elections – where the many of Republican U.S. Senate and governor candidates have backed near-total abortion bans.
According to Ms. Richards:
“It’s an issue that impacts all people and all women. […] If they should overturn Roe this is going to be systemic and this will animate voters. […] I think this is going to be a very motivating issue and that is what we are working on here at American Bridge. We are seeing now Republican governors and legislatures making this their highest priority to pass bans in their state against access to safe and legal abortion. I think it’s just now sinking in for voters and particularly women voters, that this is what the Republican Party is prioritizing. The Republicans are focused on ending access to safe and legal abortion.”
Already, Republicans across the country have argued that rape and incest victims should be denied abortion access, applauded efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade, and signed into law or advocated for deeply unpopular total abortion bans, including at the federal level.
