Today, American Bridge 21st Century released the following statement from co-chair Cecile Richards on Gov. Greg Abbott’s Texas abortion ban. The bill will prohibit abortions as early as six weeks – before many people even know they are pregnant – and rewards any member of the public who successfully sues anyone involved in assisting a person getting an abortion, including friends, neighbors, medical providers, and even Uber drivers.
“This abortion ban, part of Governor Abbott and Texas Republicans’ despicable plan to make reproductive health care completely out-of-reach, is devastating for millions of Texans. It turns anti-abortion extremists into vigilantes, rewarding them for bullying and harassing people who are seeking safe and legal abortion access,” said American Bridge 21st Century co-chair Cecile Richards. “In Texas, and across the country, the Republican Party is rolling back rights that women have had for more than 40 years in America – the right to make their own personal decisions about pregnancy. These abortion bans make it hardest on people who already have less access to health care, including women with low incomes and women of color. These blatant political attacks are a reminder of how important it is for Democrats to turn out the women who delivered victories for the party in 2018 and 2020. This diverse group of women will decide who controls Congress and local legislatures across the country. By communicating to and activating these key voters early and consistently, we can help to elect leaders who will support and protect essential health care services like abortion.”
In-depth research from American Bridge 21st Century in key battleground states shows Democrats will have to effectively communicate their accomplishments to women voters in order to maintain and grow their majorities in Congress. These voters trust President Biden over Republicans, but will need to be better informed on the proposals they care about, like the Child Tax Credit, which would be made permanent under the Building Back Together Agenda.
