After nearly four years of Donald Trump undermining our elections and posing a threat to American democracy as we know it, there aren’t any surprises about how he’ll behave as Americans head to cast ballots today. Let’s just get these three things out of the way now:
- As he has done during his entire presidential campaign, Donald Trump will instruct his supporters to harass and intimidate local election officials as they attempt to ensure free, fair, secure elections take place.
- Donald Trump will lie about cheating in elections nationwide. Neither Trump, his campaign, the Republican National Committee, nor Trump’s personal or campaign lawyers will produce a shred of evidence tonight to verify Trump’s claims that widespread cheating is occurring on Election Day.
- Donald Trump will declare victory even before the race is called in individual states or nationwide. No matter how big or small the margin between himself and his opponent, Donald Trump will declare victory before all the votes are counted and a winner is projected.
In anticipation of Donald Trump’s lies today, American Bridge 21st Century President Pat Dennis released the following statement:
“Donald Trump has run an undisciplined, unfocused, and unserious campaign. He will not be victorious tonight for numerous reasons, but widespread voter fraud will not be one of them. Trump’s grievance-filled presidential campaign hinged on the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Trump hasn’t backed down from that position and refused to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 election. He’s focused more on undermining our elections and plotting political retribution than he has promoting a positive vision for the future for the country.
“Trump stumbled his way down the stretch to Election Day. In the crucial final days of the campaign, he’s spent time holding rallies in states that he will lose, like California and New York, and spending time in states he won in 2020, like North Carolina. He canceled an event in Georgia, a key battleground state he lost in 2020, and canceled multiple interviews with major media outlets allegedly due to exhaustion.
“When Trump did show up to an event to pursue votes he desperately needed, he wasted the opportunity to make his case to the American people, instead opting to listen to a playlist for nearly an hour or comment on the genitalia of dead golfers.
“For four years, Trump spread the same unfounded lies about election integrity that he will repeat like a broken record as Americans go to the polls to soundly reject him and MAGA extremism all the way down the ballot.”
Donald Trump’s most recent refusals to commit to the results of tonight’s election:
- When Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee in May, he wouldn’t commit to accepting the 2024 election results and instead continued to undermine election integrity, saying, “If everything’s honest, I’ll gladly accept the results. If it’s not, you have to fight for the right of the country.”
- During the first presidential debate in June, Trump refused to unequivocally commit to accepting the results of the 2024 presidential election.
- In August, in an interview with CBS News, Trump said, “If I see that we had a fair and free election, which I hope to be able to say, but if I see that, I will be — you will never see anybody more honorable than me.”
