This week, American Bridge Co-Chair and former president of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards joined MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes to discuss the impact of Roe v. Wade being overturned and extreme moves made by Republicans to introduce a nationwide abortion ban.
“This is not what the American people want. It is incredibly unpopular and it really goes to the very heart of freedom in this country, the freedom to make your own decisions about your pregnancy,” said American Bridge 21st Century Co-Chair Cecile Richards. “That’s something that people do not believe politicians should be deciding, and particularly someone like Lindsey Graham, who frankly, will never be pregnant and will never know the consequences.”
In addition to Senate Republicans like Lindsey Graham calling for a national abortion ban, over the past two weeks, two Republican candidates for statewide office have said that they are open to — or outright support — banning contraception.
Gov. Brian Kemp in Georgia said he was open to banning Plan B during the next legislative session, should he win in November, saying that depending “on where the legislatures are […] you could take up pretty much anything.”
And in Michigan, Republican AG candidate Matt DePerno was caught on audio comparing Plan B to fentanyl and saying that contraception should be banned and blocked at the border. Arizona GOP Senate candidate Blake Masters has also come out in support of banning contraception.
