Yesterday, Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate James Craig sided with his primary opponent Garrett Soldano – backing the disgusting and disqualifying anti-choice belief that there should be no exceptions to an abortion ban for rape victims.
When asked about Soldano’s viral remarks, Craig found no problem with the idea that life begins “even before the heartbeat” and did not push back on the twisted belief that survivors of rape should be “heroic” in their pregnancies.
This is now the second time Craig has been caught defending his draconian anti-choice beliefs. When he launched his campaign, a secret recording showed the candidate saying he will “do whatever I can” to enforce a nearly-century-old law that makes providing an abortion a felony should Roe be overturned.
Craig’s comment comes as the Republican-controlled SCOTUS debates whether to overturn Roe v. Wade. If Roe no longer protects Michiganders’ reproductive rights and if Craig – or any of his Republican primary opponents – were to become governor, abortion would once again become a felony in the state of Michigan.
