Last night, JD Vance told the same lies about the economy, abortion, health care, immigration, and crime as Donald Trump. Vance benefitted from not having the same deteriorating mental faculties as Donald Trump, who is unable to put a sentence together without slurring, mixing up his words, or losing his train of thought. Make no mistake though, JD Vance lied every chance he could to distance himself and his running mate from some of their most extreme positions on everything from foreign policy to abortion rights to the integrity of our federal elections.
Fact-checking JD Vance’s VP debate lies:
1) JD Vance lied that Donald Trump facilitated a peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election.
- Vance’s lie that Donald Trump facilitated a peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election was one of his most brazen lies of the night. Donald Trump denied the results of the election for weeks and encouraged a violent mob to storm the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the certification of the election.
- The assault on the U.S. Capitol was one of the most documented events in American history. Rioters — Trump’s own fans — demanded to hang former Vice President Mike Pence for certifying the election. At least nine people died in connection to the violent riot.
- Donald Trump still lies that the 2020 election was stolen from him and JD Vance has gone on record saying that unlike Pence, he would not have accepted the election results if he was vice president. Neither Trump nor Vance have committed to accepting the election results in November.
2) JD Vance refused to answer if Donald Trump would deport Americans and instead repeated Trump’s lies about not needing Congress to shut the border and repeated intentionally misleading rhetoric about crime related to immigrants.
- Trump asked Congress for a bill several times, shut down the government, and eventually had to take money from the Department of Defense to get his way.
- Earlier this year, Donald Trump lobbied congressional Republicans to vote against a bipartisan immigration reform bill. Trump bragged on the campaign trail that he killed the bill and gleefully told voters to “blame” him if the bill did not pass.
- Vance pushed more misleading data on crime related to immigrants by attributing four decades of crime data all to the Biden-Harris administration.
3) JD Vance lied about supporting an abortion ban.
- Vance told debate moderators that he “never” said he supported an abortion ban, but in 2022 JD Vance specifically said he wished for abortion to be “illegal nationwide.”
- In the same answer, JD Vance admitted that he was supportive of a “minimum standard,” which is essentially a ban on abortion access after a certain number of weeks that may not provide exceptions for situations of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.
4) JD Vance lied about his support for access to IVF procedures.
- Vance said that he supported IVF access, but in reality, as a senator, voted against protecting access to IVF.
5) JD Vance lied about Donald Trump saving the Affordable Care Act.
- Donald Trump once said the government should let Obamacare fail and declared it “dead” after ending cost-sharing subsidies for low-income Americans.
- The only reason he failed to repeal the program was because senators like John McCain voted against repealing health care for 30 million Americans without a plan to replace it.
6) JD Vance doubled down on his lies about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.
- Vance refused to admit he lied about Haitian immigrants stealing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. Vance was also fact-checked by debate moderators when he lied about the legal status of Haitian immigrants in Springfield.
7) JD Vance lied that Donald Trump was steady on foreign policy with Iran.
- Vance was fact-checked immediately after lying about Trump’s record in the Middle East. Vance did not acknowledge that Trump pulled out of the Iran deal, which only created more instability, uncertainty, and friction between diplomatic relations.
8) JD Vance refused to provide specific details to back up his lie that imposing harsh tariffs on trade partners would bring down the cost of child care.
- The Trump-Vance plan to issue huge tariffs on our trade partners will hike the cost of goods on consumers by up to $2,600. Tariffs will make it harder for families to raise their children, not easier.
