Just one day after the tragic school shooting in Georgia, JD Vance told rallygoers in Phoenix that school shootings are “a fact of life.”
Last night wasn’t the first time Vance made an insensitive comment in reaction to a mass shooting. In 2022, in the wake of the Uvalde shooting that took 21 innocent lives, Vance claimed calls for common sense gun safety reform were “hysterical political reactions from one side of the aisle” and that “we have to wake up to the new reality that our schools are being used as targets by these mass killers.”
After Uvalde, Vance proposed that “we need to bolster school security” instead of passing gun safety laws.
Vance’s indifference to keeping children and others safe with popular, common-sense gun safety laws is matched by his record:
- Before joining the Senate, Vance called a 2022 bipartisan gun safety deal a “bad idea,” a “slippery slope”, and confirmed that he would have voted against it if he was in the Senate.
- As a senator, Vance opposed enhancing the background check system for gun purchases, banning bump stocks, and issuing a ban on ghost guns.
- In the Senate, Vance was opposed to gun violence prevention measures and accused the Biden Administration of “trying to find new ways to take guns away from law-abiding citizens.”
- After President Biden issued executive orders to help address gun violence in 2021, Vance wrote an op-ed claiming the president’s actions were “the worst kind of political showmanship.”
