Representatives Mike Kelly, Jeff Miller, and Bill Shuster — the latter two, chairs of the House Transportation and Veteran’s Affairs Committees, respectively — just endorsed Donald Trump. And the GOP frontrunner scored an even bigger nod yesterday, when former Speaker of the House John Boehner drew a line in the sand when it comes to his pick for the GOP nomination.
After calling Ted Cruz, “Lucifer in the flesh” and elaborating that he had “never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life,”Boehner got down to brass tax, saying that he would never vote for Cruz in a general election but, according to the Stanford Daily, “accepted Trump as the presumptive Republican nominee…[and] would vote for Trump in the general election if he becomes the Republican nominee.”
Don’t be surprised if Donald Trump has some kind words for Boehner in coming days. Last night, Trump praised Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as a “good guy” –which Al Cross, dean of the Kentucky press corps, suspects means that McConnell has behind closed doors indicated to Trump that his public comments about second-ballot optimism are just to protect his caucus, and that he’d readily get behind Trump’s candidacy.
Speaker Paul Ryan has for months urged party unity and for his party to come behind its eventual nominee, even if it’s Trump. Now its finally happening: Former Speaker Boehner, Leader McConnell, and much of the “GOP Washington establishment,” are ready to get behind Donald Trump.
