NEW AUDIO: North Carolina State Superintendent Candidate Michele Morrow Says She Wants Bible Studies Back in Public School

Aug 13, 2024

Michele Morrow: “I absolutely believe we need to get elective Bible classes back in every middle and high school — in our schools.”

Questioner: “Oh, and public school?”

Michele Morrow: “Oh absolutely.”

Today, American Bridge released new audio of North Carolina GOP state Superintendent nominee Michele Morrow advocating to put Bible studies into public schools. The audio was captured at the Republican National Convention when an American Bridge operative approached Morrow and asked her about allowing schools to teach the Bible. Morrow also spoke highly of Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters, who mandated that grades 5-12 start teaching the Bible.

Listen to the audio here and read the transcript below:

Questioner: Are y’all thinking about trying to like, push, like, I don’t want to say it’s creationism and Genesis in public schools but allowing…

Michele Morrow: I don’t know if you’ve been watching what’s been happening in Oklahoma with Ryan Walters?

Questioner: Oh, yes.

Morrow: Ryan Walters reached out to me during the campaign.

Questioner: No way.

Morrow: And I just saw him yesterday. Met him in person for the first time. I absolutely believe that we need to get elective Bible classes back in every middle and high school — in our schools.

Questioner: Oh, and public school?

Morrow: Oh, absolutely.

Morrow previously drew national attention for calling for the televised execution of President Barack Obama and attending the January 6th insurrection. Morrow has also come under scrutiny for saying Muslims should not be allowed to hold elected office and advocating for cameras to be placed in school bathrooms.

Morrow’s candidacy is that much scarier with the prospect of religious zealot and known Holocaust denier Mark Robinson winning the gubernatorial race. Robinson has proclaimed that homosexuality does not belong in the churchpushed antisemitic tropes, quoted Hitler, and spread Islamophobia.

In releasing the audio, American Bridge spokesperson Philip Shulman released the following statement: “While Michele Morrow might not want to talk to reporters, she’s making it clear to presumed supporters that she wants to push the Bible and Christianity on North Carolina’s children regardless of their religious background. Michele Morrow and Mark Robinson have shown a disdain for religious freedom and, if given the chance, will push Christian nationalism as far as they can in North Carolina.”
