GROSS — In new audio captured by American Bridge, North Carolina GOP gubernatorial nominee Mark Robinson can be heard agreeing with the idea that “birth control…makes [women] a little bit more inclined to be promiscuous,” and also claimed, with no evidence, that birth control is “being forced on very young ladies.” Robinson, who recently reiterated that he wants to get his state’s abortion ban down to “zero” weeks, also claimed in the new audio that “those abortion pills are dangerous.”
“Alleged porn store aficionado Mark Robinson’s weird obsession with women’s bodies is gross. He’d be better served taking a sex education class than trying to regulate what they do with their bodies,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Alexandra De Luca.
Robinson’s extreme anti-abortion history is well documented, and his vile comments don’t stop there. See below for how he has negatively compared abortion to birth control and downplayed the impact of rape and incest. He also mocked women’s empowerment and pointed to his genitals, saying, “Why don’t you use some of that building up of your mind and build enough up of empowerment to to move down here to this region down here [points to genitals], and get this under control.” He also called for abstinence-only sex education, and insinuated unplanned pregnancies only happen because of a lack of personal responsibility. Robinson paid for an abortion thirty years ago.
- “And I’m not afraid to tell it, because when we start talking about the issue of abortion in this country, we love the thought to smokescreen, ‘what about rape and incest?’ Here it is, here it is, we’re not talking about people having to make tough decisions because of rape and incest. They know it and we know it. What we’re talking about is what we built in this nation — a system where we use the murdering of infants for birth control. That is what we’re talking about. We know it. The overwhelming majority of people who go inside the abortion clinics are going not because of some trouble they face of rape or incest, it’s because of convenience.”
- “One of the things we love to tell our young men and women is ‘we want to empower you so that you can be strong in society.’ Particularly, we love to tell our young women that; we want to empower you. We want to help you to build up your mind so you can be in power. Here’s a novel idea: Why don’t you use some of that building up of your mind and build enough up of empowerment to to move down here to this region down here [points to genitals], and get this under control. See because this region right here, that’s the only region on your body that can make life and take life. If there’s anything we need to be telling our young people is they need to be responsible with their reproductive systems. That means you don’t lay down and act like you’re making a baby ‘til you’re ready to have a baby. All this giving out of birth control and advising people how, and ‘well you see if you do it this way, you won’t have a baby if you do it that way.’ Here’s how you don’t have a baby. You don’t have what you do to make a baby until you’re ready to have that baby. You be responsible with your body — that’s a novel idea. Has not reached our school system sadly.”
- “Here’s what I’d like to do. I would like to get back to young people how to be responsible with their bodies, not teaching our young people that they could go out and do as they please and then go out and kill the baby because they found themselves, quote, ‘in trouble.’ We always talk about empowering our young people, empowering our young women, empowering our young men. If we want to empower our young people, the very thing that we need to empower them with is a sense of responsibility over their own bodies. And that responsibility does not start with going to the abortion clinic. It starts with being responsible about whether or not you’re going to engage in activity that causes you to get pregnant.“
