Nobody Expected Anything From Derrick Van Orden

Feb 25, 2025

Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) has backed the GOP’s budget resolution, a measure that could result in millions of Americans losing access to health care and groceries. This decision comes at the expense of critical support for working families, all to give a massive tax break to billionaires.

“Derrick Van Orden chose to put tax cuts for billionaires ahead of protecting health insurance for 90,900 of his constituents. It’s hard to call it a betrayal, because nobody really could have reasonably expected him to have their backs. He remains an embarrassment to his district and nation, and a drain on the families who will ultimately suffer due to his votes,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Nico Delgado.

The budget resolution would cut Medicaid up to $880 billion and SNAP up to $230 billion. Wisconsinites who depend on Medicaid and SNAP will suffer as a result:

  • Approximately 90,900 (15.5%) of Van Orden’s constituents in Wisconsin’s 3rd District are covered by Medicaid or CHIP, and over 34,000 people in the district have used SNAP.

Van Orden voted to slash Medicaid and SNAP benefits despite promising he wouldn’t play “politics with a hungry child’s meal.” Van Orden previously voted for a Republican package that could have taken Medicaid coverage away from nearly two million Americans.
