“I’m a black NAZI.” — Mark Robinson

Tonight, the scandal-plagued, self-described “black NAZI” Mark Robinson lost his bid for governor of North Carolina. Robinson spent the better part of two years running from story after story about the offensive things he had said and done, all while building a campaign that was built on hate, self-victimization, and lies.

But it wasn’t just Robinson’s extremism that tanked his campaign. From reports that he did not pay his taxes for five years to being a would-be rubber stamp for the charter school industry to barely showing up to do his job, even in times of crisis, Robinson proved he wasn’t up to the job to be governor of North Carolina.

In response, American Bridge spokesperson Philip Shulman released the following statement:

“Mark Robinson’s hatred and demonization of anyone who he deemed different is what propelled him to the top of the MAGA cult. Trump and the DC Republican establishment embraced him early on, despite calling people who get abortions murderers, wanting to go back to a time when women couldn’t vote, making fun of school shooting survivors, encouraging people to read Hitler, calling the LGBTQ+ community ‘filth,’ filing multiple bankruptcies and failing to pay taxes for years, and seeing his family’s non-profit owe North Carolina taxpayers more than $132,000

“But as Mark Robinson became such a toxic candidate he undoubtedly had a negative impact on other candidates running up and down the ticket. That’s why so many of them, including Donald Trump, started distancing themselves and scrubbing whatever connections they had to him after it was revealed he called himself a ‘black NAZI.’ The fact these other candidates on the ballot were willing to support Robinson through every prior controversy shows how little they care about North Carolinians.

“ Mark Robinson’s nomination is what happens when you’re running as part of a MAGA cult that values extremism. The embrace of Robinson by the GOP for most of the cycle is a testament to the fact that they are no longer a political party that has any semblance of decency, and instead, only survive based on fealty to their cult leader. We expect to see other emboldened extremist candidates like Mark Robinson run for office in the near future, and American Bridge will be there to help stop them.”
