First, Trump started using Russian talking points on Crimea, arguing that Russia never invaded Ukraine and, even if they did, the “people of Crimea…would rather be with Russia.” Now, Trump’s co-opted a much more cynical and irresponsible Russian talking point: that President Obama somehow “founded” ISIS.
And yes, that’s a distinctly Russian talking point, according to former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul — just the latest data point in an alarming Trump trend toward a hardline pro-Putin foreign policy doctrine.
Trump isn’t backing away from his wildly irresponsible characterization of the president as the “founder of ISIS,” if his Hugh Hewitt interview from this morning is to be believed. Apparently, pro-Russia talking points are the only ones Trump’s able to stick to with any consistency.
