“But the reality is, on the issues that make up our agenda, we have more common ground than disagreement…Donald Trump can help us make it a reality.” — Paul Ryan, 6/2/16
Paul Ryan tries to portray himself as a moderate on immigration issues, but the reality is that Ryan has blocked all efforts to provide legal protections to immigrant families. Even more so, he’s eager to push an immigration agenda with his preferred candidate, Donald Trump.
Ryan has steadfastly refused to consider comprehensive immigration reform, claiming that President Obama is “untrustworthy on this issue.” Ryan is so intent on Donald Trump setting the Republican Party’s immigration positions that he joined the lawsuit in the Supreme Court blocking President Obama’s immigration relief.
Rather than work toward a solution, Ryan wants to leave immigration policy in the hands of Donald Trump, a man who:
- Began his campaign by characterizing immigrants are “rapists” and criminals who are bringing drugs and crime.
- Thinks the U.S. should start racial profiling.
- Blames undocumented immigrants and the “open border” for the opioid epidemic.
- Called for ending 14th Amendment-guaranteed birthright citizenship, and denigrated American citizens born to immigrant parents as “anchor babies”.
- Pledged to impose large-scale forcible deportation of all undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.
- Promised to impose limits on legal immigration.
