Tillis’s vote sold out North Carolina

Thom Tillis made headlines around the country last week when he abandoned his “constitutional conservatism” to cast a vote in favor of President Trump raiding military construction funding to pay for his border wall.

But that vote wasn’t just an embarrassing display of political cowardice. A new list of military construction projects potentially put at risk by Trump’s border wall includes millions of dollars for North Carolina military facilities, including “more than $100 million for water treatment plant improvements at Camp Lejeune.”

With one vote, Tillis managed to deal a serious blow both to his political career and to North Carolina military families.

Tillis slammed for “very public 180” on national emergency disapproval

What North Carolinians are seeing about Tillis’s “switcheroo”

Robesonian: Tillis flips, backs Trump’s declaration

“Tillis was among a group of GOP senators who had wavered amid concerns that Trump’s die-hard loyalty from millions of conservative voters could lead them to punish defecting lawmakers in next year’s elections.”

NC Policy Watch: Tillis flips back to Trump camp on national emergency

“‘I suspect that maybe some people had signaled that behavior like this may lead to being primaried,’ [Andrew Taylor, a political science professor at North Carolina State University] said. ‘He was in damage control.’”

Washington Post: Tillis’s reversal sums up state of Senate Republicans — few willing to cross Trump

“Tillis’s actions highlighted a hardening reality in Washington: Republicans who have real near-term political skin in the game are not willing to stand up to him.”

American Bridge Statement on National Emergency Disapproval Resolution

American Bridge released the following statement after Senators Tillis, Gardner, Perdue, McSally, and Ernst sided with President Trump to vote against the disapproval resolution blocking Trump’s national emergency. The resolution passed the Senate 59-41.

“It’s crystal clear that Republican Senators are more scared of a primary challenge than they are loyal to their principles or to their constituents,” said American Bridge spokesperson Amelia Penniman. “It’s another example in a long list of Republicans abandoning conservative principles in the interest of political power, and another reason they are wholly unfit to lead.”

QUICK CLIP: They’re Toast

Don’t take it from us. Even conservatives are admitting President Trump’s national emergency declaration spells trouble for 2020 Senate Republicans.

This weekend, talking heads and pundits filled the airwaves with grim predictions for Senate Republicans who are increasingly between Trump and a hard place as 2020 approaches.

Jennifer Rubin: “I think Susan Collins is going to be toast. I think Cory Gardner is going to be toast. I think Thom Tillis is going to be toast.”

QUICK CLIP: Tillis’s Shutdown Is Hurting North Carolinians

“By refusing to take action to reopen the federal government, Senate Republicans have abdicated the responsibility of a coequal branch of government,” said American Bridge spokesperson Amelia Penniman. “Thom Tillis’s endorsement of Trump and McConnell’s reckless shutdown is hurting thousands of North Carolinians going without paychecks. His constituents deserve better.”

Statement on Voter Irregularities Under Investigation in NC-09

The North Carolina Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement has voted – for the third time – not to certify the outcome of the election in North Carolina’s 9th congressional district due to “claims of numerous irregularities and concerted fraudulent activities related to absentee mail ballots.”

American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates released the following statement: “The shocking discoveries made public in recent days warrant a complete investigation that is free of any partisan interference whatsoever. It is crucial that this election not be tainted by criminal activity, and the allegation that a Bladen County official was on the payroll of Mark Harris’ campaign and stood to be paid a $40,000 bonus if Mark Harris won the county is profoundly disturbing.  It is also telling and disappointing that after years of spewing wild-eyed and unsubstantiated theories about voter fraud the Republican Party of North Carolina has […]

Confirmation That Trump’s ACA Sabotage is Hurting North Carolina Families

“Donald Trump is so committed to forcing Trumpcare upon the country that he’s intentionally sabotaging insurance marketplaces at the expense of working people in North Carolina and many other states, resulting in higher premiums and deductibles.  If Trump has his way, costs will climb even higher, 23 million people will be kicked off their insurance, and coverage for preexisting conditions will be gutted – all so the wealthy can get a giant tax cut. That’s a raw deal for the majority of the country, and it must be stopped,” said American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates.

The Hateful 8: Washington Insider Richard Burr’s Worst Headlines

Senator Richard Burr has fumbled his way through the election, repeatedly making headlines for his Trumpian actions and Washington insider record. Here are the worst ones we’ve seen so far — most within just the last few weeks:

1. CNN releases audio of Burr joking about shooting Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton:

2. McClatchy DC and The Raleigh News & Observer article details Burr’s tight-knit connections with Big Energy. Of the hundreds and thousands the GOP senator has raked in over the years, Burr’s received at least $88,000 from the coal industry in just the last year — “North Carolina has no active coal mines.”

3. Like GOP presidential nominee, like GOP senatorial nominee. Last week, Senator Burr made a very Trumpian move when he banned the News & Observer from covering his campaign.

4. McClatchy DC reports on Burr’s 2005 efforts to make it easier […]

Pat McCrory Calls Donald Trump “The Best Of America”

That’s right, at the Trump rally in Wilmington, Governor Pat McCrory said that the GOP nominee who has attacked Gold Star families, made fun of a disabled reporter, and bragged about sexual assault, is “the best of America.” Hardly surprising from a governor who torpedoed North Carolina’s economy with the discriminatory HB2 law.

See for yourself:

Trump: Come here, Governor. He’s been loyal to Trump from day one.

McCrory: We need an outsider to clean up Washington, D.C. Just like we had an outsider to clean up Raleigh, North Carolina. This is the best of America. God bless y’all. Thank you very much.

Just Like Trump: Burr Bans Newspaper, Jokes About Shooting Hillary

Senator Richard Burr was right when he said, “there’s no separation between me and Donald Trump.”  In less than 12 hours, Burr managed to ban a newspaper from covering his campaign and get caught making a joke about gun owners targetting Hillary Clinton. Pretty sure we’ve heard both of those before (here and here) from Trump himself.

Trump’s still getting in trouble for those and many more of his outrageous and offensive comments and actions. Now, one week before Election Day, Senator Burr’s already troubled campaign is in a death spiral. Burr better brush up his resume because his life as a Washington insider is finally coming to a close.

See the headlines that promise to follow Burr through November 8:
