The following is the statement of American Bridge 21st Century President Pat Dennis on the Supreme Court decision ending Trump’s $2,000 a year tariff tax on American families:
“Today, the Supreme Court did what Republicans in Congress refused to do: rein in Donald Trump’s reckless abuse of presidential power. His tariffs were illegal, poorly planned, and hit nearly every part of American life.
“Families paid more for basics, small businesses struggled to stay open, and Trump ignored the turmoil, creating chaos for Main Street while protecting the interests of the wealthy few.
“The damage is still unfolding. Families are seeing their budgets stretched further, workers face stagnant wages, and businesses continue to bear the brunt of his policies. For many, the damage can’t be undone. Businesses have closed, wages have been lost, and this administration’s terrible economic policies have killed growth opportunities. For many, what has been lost cannot be recovered.
“Trump’s tariffs haven’t even worked to bring the macroeconomic changes he promised on the campaign trail. The U.S. manufacturing industry is struggling, farmers in the heartland are losing trade partners, jobs from overseas have not been reshored, and recent reports show the trade deficit increased last year.
“Even after this ruling, the Trump administration has vowed to find a way to keep taxing Americans, showing once again that everyday Americans are treated like cash cows while billionaires benefit – and Congressional Republicans have not shown they will do anything to stop them. Voters will remember this betrayal, and they will hold those responsible accountable.”
