Donald Trump and Republican leadership in the House and Senate tried unsuccessfully to block the establishment of an independent commission to investigate the violent insurrection. The events of January 6 are linked to at least nine deaths – including five police officers.
The House later formed a select committee to investigate the attacks and found Trump purposefully provoked his supporters into denying election results and knew his actions were illegal while pressuring the vice president, members of Congress, the Department of Justice, and state officials to break the law, among other unconstitutional and conspiratorial elements. The commission also found Trump oversaw an effort to create and submit false electoral certificates to Congress and the National Archives.
Ultimately, the commission would recommend the Department of Justice make the following criminal charges against Donald Trump:
- Obstruction of an official proceeding, which was the January 6th meeting of Congress.
- Conspiracy to defraud the United States. The committee found this happened in multiple ways, including Trump’s lies about the 2020 election and then-Vice President Pence’s role in certification, among other incidents.
- Conspiracy to knowingly make a false statement. The committee reported Trump participated in a plot to submit fake slates of electors to Congress and the National Archives.
- Assisting, aiding or comforting an insurrection. The committee concluded that Trump incited the U.S. Capitol attack and that there was enough evidence to convict and charge him with “assisting, aiding or comforting” the insurrection.
“This fucking guy is the only president to have Congress vote to investigate their role in unleashing a violent insurrection on the U.S. Capitol – and to have criminal charges against them referred to the Department of Justice. The Republican Party should be ashamed for handing over their party’s nomination, national committee, and entire fundraising structure to someone so blatantly anti-democratic, corrupt, and self-serving. MAGA diehards may be willing to forget the unprecedented event that was the insurrection and subsequent events that followed, but we’ll work to remind common-sense voters across the country of Donald Trump’s betrayal of the Constitution. Common-sense voters will reject his chaos at the ballot box in November,” said American Bridge 21st Century Presidential Campaigns Communications Director, Brandon Weathersby.
